If anyone down in Portsmouth, a short ferry ride across to Gosport is the submarine museum, and HMS Alliance. You can go on board her, and go right through, see how they hot bedded, and lived in terrible conditions, it really is a visit worth doing. She has been completely renovated, kt

Crews on M.N. ships rarely undressed for the two week crossing of the North Atlantic 'till later in the war as it was, by then much safer, except on our last homeward bound convoy HX348 we lost two ships in daylight hours. Natch' on the following westbound convoy ON300 we stayed fully dressed day n' night 'till we had news of their surrender May 8th. Sailed Independent homeward bound 29th May. Records from Ship Movement cards. By the way thanks to this site on how to get them. My thanks to all researchers helping me. Cheers, Eric

Das Boot is one of the top most well made closest to the truth 18 movies ever made.
It goes along with 'A night to remember' most correct version of Titanic and 'Saving Private Ryan' as the most correct second WW2 film.

For what its worth lads, Today's Sub mariners do 100 days about at least one U.K. nuclear sub at sea at all times, My sons brother in law Submariner always looks so gaunt after a tour of duty. Had many a good conversation with him, They the crew never no where they are in the world during the 100 day tour. Terry.

Could you ask him what beer they serve in the mess, if they still do. I cannot remember the name now, going back to approx 85 last time on a sub. It was pretty heavy, approx 3 times the strength of a pint on shore.

The Royal Navy doesn't like to advertise its drinking but it does / did allow it. There are / were traditional toasts to be had at dinner in the officers mess and there is / was a particular toast for every day of the week!
