Re: das boot
Crews on M.N. ships rarely undressed for the two week crossing of the North Atlantic 'till later in the war as it was, by then much safer, except on our last homeward bound convoy HX348 we lost two ships in daylight hours. Natch' on the following westbound convoy ON300 we stayed fully dressed day n' night 'till we had news of their surrender May 8th. Sailed Independent homeward bound 29th May. Records from Ship Movement cards. By the way thanks to this site on how to get them. My thanks to all researchers helping me. Cheers, Eric

Re: das boot
Das Boot is one of the top most well made closest to the truth 18 movies ever made.
It goes along with 'A night to remember' most correct version of Titanic and 'Saving Private Ryan' as the most correct second WW2 film.

Re: das boot
Could you ask him what beer they serve in the mess, if they still do. I cannot remember the name now, going back to approx 85 last time on a sub. It was pretty heavy, approx 3 times the strength of a pint on shore.

The Royal Navy doesn't like to advertise its drinking but it does / did allow it. There are / were traditional toasts to be had at dinner in the officers mess and there is / was a particular toast for every day of the week!
