As said Keith from the proper chronicals they were originally a band of warrior monks. Who saw wayfarers on passage from Europe to the Holy lands and kept off riff raff and and the likes. Anything else and you are getting the Hollywood version. As a past and present Grand officer of both the Knights of the Temple and the other preceptory degree of Knights of Malta. Know the rituals of both degrees and past history which your so-called experts on such, unless they are themselves members of the order, will not know. The same as the ineffective ways the press and media try to illustrate freemasonry in general. To know one has to be one. If your not and listening to others putting their own version across you are wasting your time. Cheers JWS
