As said in a previous post, it is a condition of legal migration into Australia that an English test be taken, and as said and Englishman I met last year failed and was not allowed permanent entry. And yet they still allow so called asylum seekers having no English means of communication into the country. The illegal immigrants allowed into a country should be accepted if they want by the former colonizing country as they will have a similar background and possible speech in their repertoire, in which case France should have the dubious honour of housing all Syrian and most of North African refugees. The UK for many years has taken in those from India and Pakistan without being told by the EU. Stand up France and face your commitments they are all yours. Do your duty to your former colonys. JS

As a matter of interest, i enquired for Hampshire police, what was the cost of iterpreters last year, they also cover the Isle of Wight, the figure given is£494,360, thats just one police force, the whole figure for police, other emergency service and the NHS must be horrendous KT

It's not only the cost of interpreters, there is also the cost of all leaflets etc. That has to be printed in multiple languages.
I believe in Spain (an EU country) yo have to supply your own intpreter.

In the hospitals in various languages (including English) there are big notices saying 'We only speak Spanish, if you want to be understood bring your own interpreter', our human rights lawyers would have a field day if similar was in our hospitals

John #11 when Howard was in office any one attempting to come to Oz had to gain 100 points on a number of issues. The abilty to speak and understand English carreid 50 points and was a compulsory part of the test. When he came to office Rudd the dud took thta part ouit saying it would disadvantage a lot of prospective migrants. WTF?

Guy on talk back the other day just back from working 5 years in Thailand. In his words, if I had not learned the language and local customs I would not have been able to work there, they expect all migrants to the country to learn or leave.

I've just come back from the hospital in Liverpool.A Chinaman I would say in his 30's was sitting near me another Chinaman was directed to him by a member of staff, yes an interpreter. The doctor shouted Mr.Wong the patient who cant speak English shouted yes and jumped up.I would say the interpreter was with the patient for about three quarters of an hour, what did that cost I wonder,a minimum 3 hours and a high payment first hour. What I would like to know this patient a young man who can't speak English what is he working at in this country.

Here in Canada if making a call to any government agency. We are asked to press one for English.[pees me off]
This after over two thirds of the population are English speaking.
    This happened to me yesterday.
Pressed one for English. On the other end of the line was a East Indian.
I could not understand a single word.
Finally I told him to get me some one who spoke English.
Got a Scottish lady, Nearly as bad.
    Apologies to Marion.
