Re: Democracy
To Marian I agree with you my opinions are deeply ingrained, they always are when I see injustice.
To Brian, four fellow seamen and myself joined the picket line at Bentley Colliery near Doncaster with hard working men who wanted to save their community and their way of life. The second time we went we were turned around by the police on the motorway.
Will have to go now, I had a smart phone delivered and it is proving far smarter than me, struggling to get the bast..d set up.

Re: Democracy
I have just been on Jeremy Corbyn`s FACE BOOK after posting Three mails regarding the Labour Government confiscating all the Money paid by France for the Widows and Survivors of French Death Camps in West Africa,
Ed Miliband also refused to answer after around 20 mails.
The three mails I sent have all been Deleted.
So I have just sent a Fourth mail to him. If he deletes it again I shall publish it in the news papers.
All you Labour Supporters should all get on to him
After all if you want to do something for your fellow Seafarers who paid the ultimate price in WW2 then Do It instead of saying `What a fine fellow Corbyn is, `
Deeds speak louder than words.

Re: Democracy
#191,Ooop's didn't realise Brian & I were having to sharing a one liner.
The mining industry collapsed because of the economics Jim. The strikes were down to Scargill and his ilk. In extractive industries, in this case coal mining there, is a finite resource. When that resource is exhausted or becomes uneconomical or mining conditions deteriorate and it become dangerous, then the mines have to close, that is the nature of mining. Buyers of coal, predominately power stations can purchase from anywhere in the world. It doesn't matter whether it's deep mining, opencast/strip this coal can be produced for far less than $20 per tonne because the ratio of overburden/muck is so low the average ratio could be 5 cubic metre of overburden to gain one cubic metre of coal compared to the UK which is around 30 cubic metres of over burden to one cubic metre of coal.
To this day miners who worked 5 years or more are entitled to a pension well in excess of normal standard because of the danger involved [fair enough] They also receive 7 tonnes of concessionary coal per annum, should the miner die this continues with his wife. If they don't have an open fire then they receive the equivalent in cash. Household coal is retailing around £200.00 per tonne at the moment give or take, therefore thats £1400.00 per annum.

Re: Democracy
My brother got a Coal Board Pension and the free coal,
His wife has just got rid of the coal fired heating and got a gas fired one, and gets the money instead.
In Lancashire the Coal mines were an average of 3,000 feet deep. [ the one I worked in was only 1,000 feet down.] deep mined coal is expensive to produce,
but when Harold Wilson closed the 290 mines, it was because he signed the Lima Agreement in 1967, which meant he was to close down British Industry and transfer it all
to Third World Countries, So coal mines were closed so we had to buy coal from Poland and other poor countries of those days.
I was in Sunderland in Dry dock and on the River is a coal mine, alongside the River berth was a Big Bulk carrier discharging 150,000 tons of Polish Coal. not a few hundred yards from the pit head.
I thought then it was a crazy idea.

Re: Democracy
The Harold Wilson Government of the sixties allowed cheap imports of Polish coal to flood into the UK, undercutting the cost of home produced coal.

Re: Democracy
Vic you dont know my politics you obviously assume I vote Labour but that's for me to know.I like to play the Devils Advocate, what I notice about many Tories they cant debate something without putting the boot in,they always have to dish the dirt on someone to try and win their case instead of offering constructive comment.

Re: Democracy
Jim, believe it or believe it not, I am not really interested in your political persuasion.
The allegation that you make a bout Tories can equally be said about people with left leaning tendencies.
I always try to stick to the facts, Wilson did allow cheap coal imports from Poland.
The other fact is also true, an outgoing Labour Government has never left the country in healthy financial position, always in the red.

Vic
