John Re #145 It more than likely gets up some peoples nose when the subject in hand shies away from nautical events however this one wasn't nautical to start with. However I realize how you feel when people harp on about politics and such. This is the only media where people can comment on government activities and show their displeasure with such. I strongly believe such, it is however I would think being monitored by government departments to guage the feelings of the public in general and is a sure way fire of doing it. Brian writes or sends e-mails direct and they probably write him off as a crank (sorry Brian) however if other similar feelings are expressed on the internet showing the same views and of sufficient amount they are forced to take notice and monitor. If more of the general public did something it would make the government more accountable to the British public, it is the mediocracy of the electorate that they have got away with what they have. This is not a party political broadcast but facts as I see it of the modern world we live in. The Union part of it is up to a persons thoughts and own morals on the subject and the working man will always have a claim to a fair days pay for a fair days work. Whatever that is, is up to the individual. We have had this complaint before about straying away from a subject, we are supposed to be a bunch of seamen and there is nothing beyond our reach or capabilitys of attaining supposedly, apart from that I would back most on this site about doing a better job than the crowd in Westminster at the moment and also for the past decade or so. Sorry if my maybe over indulgence in our Lords and Masters has been offensive. But really find it hard to talk about ships all of the time especially as there are so few left belonging to the UK flag. Cheers Gilly John S

I have just sent this mail to Cameron. He probably does think I am a crank by now, But he is employed by me and millions of Tax Payers to look after us and our country...................
I don't know if the figures are correct or not, I don't thin k he will know either.
    Brian........................................

    Dear Prime Minister The RT.
    Hon. David Cameron, MP.

I wish to ask you a Question:- "Is This True?"
I refer to the Pension Reality Check. Are you aware of the following?

The British Government provides the following financial assistance:-

    BRITISH OLD AGED PENSIONER
(Bearing in mind they worked hard, paid their Income Tax and National Insurance
contributions to the British Government all their working life)
    Weekly allowance: £106.00?

    IMMIGRANTS/REFUGEES LIVING IN BRITAIN
(No Income Tax and National Insurance contribution whatsoever)
    Weekly allowance: £250.00

    BRITISH OLD AGED PENSIONER
    Weekly Spouse Allowance:£25.00?

    ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS/REFUGEES LIVING IN BRITAIN
    Weekly Spouse Allowance: £225.00

    BRITISH OLD AGED PENSIONER
    Additional Weekly Hardship Allowance: £0.00?

    ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS/REFUGEES LIVING IN BRITAIN
    Additional Weekly Hardship Allowance: £100.00

A British old age pensioner is no less hard up than an illegal
    immigrant/refugee yet receives nothing

    BRITISH OLD AGED PENSIONER

    TOTAL YEARLY BENEFIT £6,000?

    ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS/REFUGEES LIVING IN BRITAIN
    TOTAL YEARLY BENEFIT:£29,900

Please read all and then forward to all your contacts so that we can lobby for a
decent state pension. After all, the average pensioner has paid taxes and contributed to the
growth of this country for the last 40 to 60 years.

Sad isn't it? Surely it's about time we put our own people first.

No wonder there is a queue at Calais.

As far as being the best dressed on the school bus.Dr Barnardos didn't supply a school bus and if it did there wouldn't be anyone on it that was best dressed.Maybe if there had been a school bus I could have got to school early and, like terry, learned about the 3rd rail instead of the 3Rs and perfecting my skills at talking crap.
Terry .You probably have never had any real hardship in your life. I,ve Been skint really skint, slept in the streets worked on rigs at 40below freezing and put in 20 hour days hauling pipe out of the ground or moving drilling rigs from one location to another and you want me to sympathise with someone on 50k a year who might have to spend the odd night away from his family in return for a generous bonus. If you want to side with the underdogs side with the people in London who will lose money through not getting to work.
As far as thinking I,m something special.I don't think that I know it.I,m still around at 81 haven't worked for 19 years(of course that's not special in the UK)Have enough money saved to give me a decent lifestyle through investing in a pension when I could have used the money for some kind of instant gratification.Dont you think that I,m entitled to think that I,m something special having started with nothing including family.
get a life terry.Theres more to life than the 3rd rail
OH .No John you don't get the sympathy vote from me. You started it Quote, I TALK A LOAD OF CRAP, THROUGH MY HAT. As for never seeing a poor day you think what you like, I spent 3 days walking the high road in Kilburn after I left the sea looking for digs nothing to eat know here to sleep, You can be as sanctimonious as you want you insulted me not the other way around don't try and wriggle your way around it learning the 3rs and feeding a family don't you think i done the same the difference is I never insulted you. Jim I never gave Eddie Dean your address I know your house I don't know the number. And its not the few bob you get every few months I am talking about to Brian, Read his post the guy does not have a boiler to heat water amongst other things there is help for those in genuine need and Brian certainly needs that through the Ship wrecked society Regards Jim Terry.

for the past few years train travel prices have gone up many time above the growing rate of average pay rises so why not wages as well? its just another excuse to put the price of rail travel up and put part of the blame on drivers pay? anyway time to pull the communication cord on this one its getting personal I don't think there is a man jack on here that has not been skint at one time and flush another?? I would have enough to last me all my life if I snuffed it tonight? I have more things to fight right now not each other!!!! jp

#159 Quite agree John, no sense in trying to prove who had the hardest time as a youngster, we all had our crosses to bear most of us with a little (or a lot in my case) help from the Germans, we continued through life to endure hardships of one form or another, some harder than others but all a personal to ourselves.

No there is not a supporters club for anyone, but there are different points of view, some of which may align with one side of the coin and some which may align with the other, that doesn't make it a club it makes it an individuals choice.

Its about time to wrap this up, as it is becoming personal and to outsiders we will all look like a lot of silly old men trying to score points, where as in reality we are all professional seamen who faced hardships in the face of various adversities and thats the way we should be remembered or thought of. So shake hands all round and call it a draw and lets leave a legacy that we can be proud of and not another edition of 'The Goon Show'
