Re: Ab and competent crew
Cappy
simple answer.
Go onto the RYA website and look up the syllabus content for a competent crew member and then go to the MCA website and look up the same for an A.B.
With the growth of the super yacht industry the size of many of them mean that they fall within the scope of International Regulations for Merchant Ships and even if they are solely for the personal use of the owner only and even if they only carry the owner and his guests they still have to follow international regulations covering such thins as safety equipment, certification of crew etc. I would suspect that the RYA qualification is almost in line with that of an MCA certified A.B., albeit that one is working in the leisure industry whilst the other in the commercial industry.

Re: Ab and competent crew
On the back of cert. 1. This document must be produced on request.
2. Persons between 14 and 16 years are restricted to
Daylight operation only
A maximum speed of 8 knots.
Issued for the purpose of Regulation 47C(2)(a)of the navigable Waters Regulations 1958 PS Wonder if any of these Foreign Flag owners will accept as a cert. of competency on their big super duper tankers, especially if flying the underpants as a recreational vessel Cheers JS

Re: Ab and competent crew
yes a good cross reference .......must say i preffered being at sea in a large merchantman for both food and accom.showers and space etc but liked the freedom of a sailing vessel and the pleasure of being more in charge of it.........weatherwise although being in a typhoon off osaka and the weather inthe bight or cape of storms i was never truly scared but must say off the west coast of scotland in a full gale i was not a happy bunny in a 36 foot westerly......and wished i had not lead such a unreligeous life..... while in true merchant man fashion saying i have seen it worse than this.....the cold was the most dis spiriting thing and the thought of sailing shipmen......down the southern ocean or battling cape horn in winter ......does not enthrall me at all......ah well time for coffee and biscuits....regards cappy
