Remember the days of the old school yard?
For most of us going to school was a couple of years back now, but do you remember your first day at school?
It was 1948 and I had my fifth birthday in the April and still have them in that month. By the time September came around I was able to read thanks to my aunt.
To get to the school I had to walk to the end of our road, about quarter of a mile to the library, then turn left over the railway bridge, down past the shops and there it was.
My first day and mum was taking me, got to the library and told her this was as far as she would take me.
Into the school yard and there was a kid with a comic an I asked him if he would like me to read it to him?
Up comes a second year kid who told me I could not read as I had not yet ben to school.
When I told him I could read he took a swing at me, we got into a bit of a fight and as a result of falling over he took the skin off one elbow.
Ran crying to the teacher who took care of him.
I was given, at the end of the day, a note for mum.
It said that if I continue to be so violent the school would have to take actions against me.
Next day during school hours mum confronted the teacher I ever had any other problems after that.
How was your day?

John, August 1961,......
After entering the classroom realised I was trapped as the windows appeared as high as the ceiling. Spent the next few months coveting the milk monitor's job as a way to escape the monotony. The weight of the crates and the glass bottles did not arise. Thankfully my parents moved house and a few months later I was introduced to my new headmistress, Sister John! [Who had taught mum also] Returned to first school recently and could not believe how low the windows were. Must have been a wee smout

I remember to this day, my mother dropping me off and them not somehow expecting me. I was told to sit here for the present and when picked me up was in tears. I still had not got the present. How can they lie to you and ask for you to be honest to them for five Years or so. First impressions: School sucked ! K

Re: Remember the days of the old school yard?
Hi John.
First day January 1936 not quite 4 years old, in short pants with silk lining but no underpants, struggling to let go of my big sisters hand, down the main Swansea to Llanelly rd to the next village. My sister was in the big school along with my two brothers. I could read thanks to my Dad; who, for the next ten years brought me books from the local library, which caused me a lot of bumps on the head as my mother who was crippled used to throw teaspoons at me to get my attention, always having a book up to my face and away to where ever the story was taking place.
The infants were in two class rooms in an annex in the girls school yard. I remember that first day when school finished I was off and running down to the common and over the railway line up behind the cemetery then across the road to the village, my sister tried to explain how she missed me leaving school but I think my mother understood. How I survived to get to the Vindi I'll never know.
Cheers Des
