    THE GANGS OF LIVERPOOL, #50
    .
I remember in the Cameo Murders Case in 1949, I got involved in a way. until the accused were cleared in 2006,
George Kelly who was Hanged in 1950, and my friend Charles Connolly who served Ten Years, was cleared by a campaign by Lou Santelli, George Skelly and I made my statements to the Court of Appeal in London. obviously too late, Kelly was described as being a member of the Peanut Gang,, another notorious gang.
This was completely wrong and went against him.
Does any one know anything about the Peanut Gang??
    Cheers
    Brian

Just reading about Rose Heilbron QC Brian she defended Kelly she said Kelly said "I'm not having some judie defending me"as it happened he was supposed to have thanked her when it was all over.I always believed that the Kelly's were part of the peanut gang I think they knocked about the dingle area. The guy who wrote about the high rip was going to follow up with the peanut gang I wonder has he written it yet?must have a look on the net.
    Regards.

    Thanks for that Jim
seems as if the Peanut gang eventually fizzled out.
Rose Heilbron defended Johson who Confessed to the murders at the Cameo, She got him aquited even tho` he confessed,
Then DCI Balmer, he came to my house and beat me up, decided to go for Kelly, he knew Kelly as a small time crook and sometimes Police informer.
It was believed that he was having a bit on the side with Kelly`s girl friend. So what a good chance to get Kelly out of the way.
Kelly was framed and went on trial defended by Rose Heilbron, who was the first ever female KC.
The first trial which was for Kelly and Charles Connolly was thrown out and a new Jury formed,
the second Trial Kelly was on first, he was found guilty of murder and sentenced to death.
Charles Connolly was then tried, Balmer told him , if he confessed he would get him Ten Years, but if he didn't he would get the death sentence the same as Kelly.
I was with Connolly`s Dad, who was a Fireman on the Georgic, he told me, Charles said, `What shall I do Dad? I am innocent`. His Dad told him better to confess and stay alive than plead not guilty and hang. so he signed the paper. Meanwhile Kelly`s appeal in London was going through, Rose Heilbron went to London and came back and told Kelly He had lost his appeal, three weeks later he was hanged in Walton.
Charles told me later he felt real bad, his confession had sealed the fate of Kelly, He swore to the day he died in 1997 when he collapsed in Asda, that he never ever knew Kelly, or had anything to do with the Cameo, The night of the Murders, Charles was in a club with his wife and won a Rumba dance contest. But with a bent Detective that was dismissed. and he got Ten Years for Conspiracy to murder.
In 1956 I met a man in Melbourne who said he had done the Cameo Murders and had got away with it.
He was a Liverpool fella on the beach.
His description fitted another man who was in the frame.
    .
A very Interesting story, George Skelly, an author wrote the book, Cameo Conspiracy, an incredible story, well worth reading if you havent already. Should be able to get it on Amazon.
    Cheers

There was a good show on Radio Merseyside a few years ago Brian where they interviewed many people who hung around the town at the time including the barmaid in the Beehive Mount Pleasant. All reckon Kelly was stitched up by DCI Balmer, they reckon Kelly and Connolly didn't even know each other but they ended up in the frame for being at the Cameo cinema together committing the hold up plus the murders.

    That is right Jim
stitched up by Stutty Northam and Jaqui Dickson and a fella from Preston, who I search for, for years around Trafford in Manchester. and in Preston.where they hung out. for Charles.
They got paid by Balmer to give evidence against Kelly and Connolly. It all took place in the Beehive, there is now a corner in there of Cameo memories.
    .
I still keep in touch with Charles Connolly`s widow, a lovely lady. we sends cards etc .
    Cheers
