    Terry, re.#28.

The rich get richer: to certain degree it is very true on the short term. the Dutch have a wonderful saying, "Clogs to clogs in three generations." Son or daughter of poor folk make a fortune, their kids pizz it away. I've seen it happen. The only exception to the rule are the Royals and of course those on the Privy List.

Those that do defy the Dutch saying, can send their children to the very top schools and Universities were the meet friends and marry future spouses from similar backgrounds. Some of these will follow your maxim, and these rich kids will become super rich. The rest will lead comfortable existences. Cinderella falling in love with a prince and living happily ever afterwards was a fairy story. My former wife was a copy typist, I was an assistant cook in the M.N.. My wife, now, was a school teacher and has two masters degrees and made a very good salary, and owned her own house and was financially secure. Do you think I could have got a date with her if I was a cook in the M.N.? Was this a modest example of money to money?

    North and South:

First I consider myself a Californian. I worked in Manhattan, lived in Connecticut for eight years My wife is a born and bred Yankee, New Jersey. We have lived in South Carolina for seventeen years (South Carolina was where the war started). I would think that gives us a fairly good idea about racial attitudes and feelings about the civil war.

    Racial relations;

I don't think relationships are perfect in any heterogeneous country, can you name one? So the states are no different than say Britain with the Mozzies, Polish, etc. etc.. That said, the relationship between blacks and whites here are way, way better than they were up North. It's little things, whites and blacks think nothing of holding the door open for the opposite race. they go fishing together, etc. etc.. That never happened up North. Two black men rescued me when I was smashed up in a boating accident. They heard the crash, stopped fishing, came over, called the coast guard, took me to the dock and the waiting ambulance...they saved my life. Sadly in the heat of the moment and being half out of it, I never got their names. Later I paid for an add in the local newspaper to try and track them down to thank them. No luck. That Christmas my wife and I phoned the local African Methodist Episcopalian (A.M.E.) church and asked if they had two children, a boy and a girl who would like a new bike from Santa (anonymously), "Yes" and so it was done, in memory of those two "good Samaritans."

Last bit, it's late. My brother was over from England. We were having pizza in a restaurant, he was facing the door. He blanched and said "We've got to get out of here."

I asked why and he made a slight gesture meaning behind me. I eased around and about a dozen black youths laughing, had just entered the restaurant, they were all wearing the same type jackets. I asked him what's the matter, they are just a high school baseball team out for after the game pizza. He asked me it there would be any trouble, and I assured him no, and there wasn't. He said if a "gang" of blacks walked in in England the whites would have run for it. I explained it wasn't a gang but a team.

It's far from rosy. a black male in the U.S. has five times more chance of being murdered than a white has, and it's what is called black on black violence. And that holds true for all forms of violent acts. Whites have their own badges of shame, rape being one of them.

    Cheers and goodnight, Rodney

Stop watching those North and south movies Terry, come to the South and see for yourself.

I can always remember being in Baton Rouge prior to the murder of Kennedy. Was told by at least one white American and I presume was the general feeling in the South, that if Kennedy ever crossed the Maison Dixie line he wouldn't be going back. This was from stevedore talk. Not too long after this maybe a year or so, it was proved correct. JS

Rodders, we have the same here in Oz. Many of the migrants who came here after the war did well setting up a business. Next generation took over and did reasonably well, but their kids having got it all for free lost it all. Produce merchant I know was a migrant the business is gone.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

    Hi Charlie,.
    .
. Hi Charlie, The Salvation Army has done some excellent searches for us.
In 1920 my granddad did a runner from my Grandma on Walney Island . leaving her with five very young daughters, one my mother.
Grandma was in The Sally, The Salvation Army Search Team found him in 1930 living in Auckland NZ under a different name and also Married with another family.
I was forced by Grandma, at a very early age , probably age Five plus, to join the Salvation Army, I became a "Little Sunbeam" no less.[ hard to believe today,] and had to go door to door selling the `War Cry` and `The Young Soldier`.
    every Saturday. or else.!!!
    .
Then when my mate, Ken Hignett of Birkenhead, got drowned in East London , South Africa, I was rescued by a 15 year old South African Lad.name of David Brinton, taken to hospital and then sailed for NZ, in 1953.
I never ever saw that lad and knew nothing about him , just a name.
Then around 2001 I got thinking , I must thank that lad before it is too late as I would have been Dead but for his actions.
I contacted the Salvation Army in South Africa, they told , No Chance, we only search for family not for anyone else. So I contacted the London Office and a Lieutenant Fairclough, who also said the same. I tried again and told him the story, this time he listened and said OK.
The only information I had was his name and age 48 years previously, and that he lived in South Africa.
Six weeks later he phoned me, They had found him living in Stranraer in Scotland, he had lived in Rhodesia and then when Zimbabwe came along moved to Scotland. He said phone him now he is waiting for your call, he gave me his number and it was fantastic to be able to thank the man for saving my life.
A few weeks later, I got a phone call from Esther Rantzen of BBC TV, to Come onto her show. Anne and I went to London all expenses paid, and on TV she asked me about the story, then she said `Have you ever met him?, ` I said No. then he came on stage and we met for the first time in over 48 years, a fantastic feeling, to be able to thank him in person. We still keep in touch.
So they can and still do some good work.
    Cheers
    Brian.

Rod, When I mention the rich get richer only today in the U.K. The chancellor announced a 5% reduction in the high rate of tax for big business, Now this is nothing less than an early xmas gift for the richest in the U.K. On the same note as an example 130,000 care workers most on the minimum wage have been denied travel expenses by their bosses, I could recite many more examples of what can only be considered as unfairness between the haves and have not's. The North South divide in the U.K. Is without doubt nothing to do with colour or creed, House prices in the London and home counties area are out of reach of someone on the minimum wage of about £6 an hour, There is only three ways of getting rich in the U.K. You either win it/ Steal it/ Or marry into it/ because under the current status quo regardless of who takes the reigns in next may's elections between consecutive governments failures and the capitalist bankers lack of investment in our ever growing young generation and the greed of said capitalists I am afraid the U.K. is on a downward slope, Along with our world envy N.H.S. Service that the mega rich don't have to rely on for life or death. This report today was an eye opener for a very embarrassed David Cameron after his pledges on tax evasion, And Cameron made him trade minister Regards Terry,

you missed out one more way of getting rich WORKING FOR IT.This is method of being successful that most people in the UK have never tried.
I can give example of many wealthy people who started with nothing. One of my best pals started life putting petrol in cars then moved on to be a tyre fitter eventually he started Cash Generator and sold out for several millions.Another pal started life as an apprentice mechanic .A few years ago he sold his 23 garages out for several millions.(if you live in the greater Manchester area you might have heard of Smith,Knight ,Faye)
my son started work as a kitchen picker with Kitchens Direct and worked his way up to a reasonable position before moving into the insurance business on commission only sales and when he could do the job I took him on(on commission only). He now owns the business doing 10 times more business than when I owned the firm as well having a large portfolio of property.
so you can see that poor people can become rich

some OF MY MATES , LEFT SCHOOL AT 15, almost uneducated. ONE STARTED REEBOK, ONE NOW OWNS 150 CASH AND CARRIES, AND ONE HAS SEVERAL TIMBER, DO IT yourself STORES ACROSS THE COUNTRY, ALL WITH A PERSONAL FORTUNE OF OVER £30,000,000
ALL STARTED with nothing but an idea and hard work, sometimes Hungry, no money, but perseverance, I even fed their kids when they had no money and paid and took them on holiday to Spain , so if they can any one can do it.
ME?? I just wanted to be a Seafaring man, but again I worked hard and got the results I wanted, now comfortable.
