Well, if the reports in the media are only half true, the Russian mafia are running a lot of our football clubs now, the country is supposed to be awash with Romanian pick pockets netc. The only thing i can vouch for is the Romanians selling the Big Issue here on the Island, and they are dropped off each day by a guy in a very posh mercedes, . When we have lots of poor countries join this wonderful club of ours, should we be surprised that they want to come to the wealthy countries. I think germany and the Netherlands has a similar problem to ours. KT

Keith from what understand about the Big Issue sellers I dont suppose they are bothered if they sell any, they class themselves as self employed with little income from selling the B.I. which opens the door to Tax Credits which in turn would give them housing benefit and rate rebates.A guy was on our local radio station he said in Birkenhead there are 4 Eastern European B.I.sellers and they are picked up by a guy at the end of the day in a big 4X4.

Here in Oz we had two minor parties, one run by Pauline 'please explain' and the Democrats. Between them the two big parties Liberal and labor got rid of them. Given half a chance they will see the Greens off as well along with the new party Palmer united. This guy is different and shows promise and for that reason he will be removed, somehow. He is a mining magnate rotten with money but some of his ideas are worthy of consideration.
Our upper house, the senate, has a wierd voting system that allows a candidate who only gets one percent of the popular vote get a seat. the two big parties are now looking to change the system so these small sometimes a bit odd cannot win.
We had a female PM, first time here, I knew her from a previous life and though I could not stand her she did have some failrly good ideas. But then she lost the plot and had an explosive go at the Mad Monk in parliament calling him a Mysoginist, you canot do that in a boys club, and that is what it is here.
Then of course once their time is over they get all the plum jobs overseas with all manner of perks. Current gov is talking of cutting some of the perks for MP's in an attempt to rein in some of the debt, will not happen the other side will not agree to it.

So vote for the UKIp by all means but my message to you is, 'better the devil you know'.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

John, mate, whilst I mostly agree with and appreciate your comment, how much longer must we be expected to put up with 'the devil you know'. Much like the situation in Britain, here in Oz we vote Labour in and then with mixed emotions and a resigned expectation we sit back and watch as with practiced ease,, they spend the next few years hell bent on creating a large deficit in the national bank balance.........and they never disappoint. Eventually, becoming bored with such manic profligacy, the electorate decides it's time to 'bite the bullet' and so, bracing itself for an expected period of mild austerity, they vote the Libs (equivalent to the U.K. Conservatives) back in, allowing them the opportunity to bring some normality back to the National economy....they rarely disappoint. However, after a few more years, the Australian workers (and others too, it must be said) decide it's time to loosen the strings on the public purse and so, out go the Libs and back come Labour cos' it's time for another big spend-up.......and so it continues with predictable monotony. Any minor parties or independents are usually only there to muddy the waters and run inferference (although in the last Labour Government their temporary cohorts, the Greens, made a bluddy nuisance of themselves). I think, Les, could be right. Perhaps, it might be worth the risk to vote in a Third Party for a spell, if only to shake some honest purpose into the self-satisfied members of both major parties who, too often, seem more concerned with advancing the interests of their own particular party rather than the interests of the country they claim to serve. Sometimes, they make yer' wanna puke. I'm sure they must make some of the old-time statesmen and politicians roll over in their graves.

Whilst we are on the subject of politics, I must say that like many others I despair of the electoral system in this country (Oz), wherein they so love the preferential method of voting on election day. For me, first past the post has to be the fairest way. It may not be perfect, but its surely better than despotism, anarchy or the convoluted system that currently exists in Australia. Don't ask me to explain it to you, but suffice it to say it's a bit like filling out your football pools, but not half as much fun.

Listen to me prattling on...oh dear! it seems I've caught the virus of making political comment which, nowadays, seems so rife on this site. I must try harder and desist from doing so...perhaps if I exercise greater control I might be able to shake it off, but the prognosis doesn't look good!

There should be a huge Stadium, get all the Politicians in it then the crowd could decide which one has to fight the Lions, The Romans had some good ideas. What a wonderful way of entertaining the masses, better than watching the Cup final, and the result could not be better.
Methinks the Pollies would start to get wise to themselves.
    Cheers
    Brian.

    Hi John
Google ,..... THEY WORK FOR YOU,...
Type in your post code, it will tell you who your MP is and what he/she has been doing for the last year, What they have voted for or against in Parliament, what committees they are on, what outside interests they are involved with and how much money they earn doing those jobs.
    Cheers

A man walks into the Election office and says to the receptionist: "I would like to put my name forward for the forthcoming elections to be an Independent candidate."

The receptionist replied: "Certainly sir. Please fill in this form.
‘He was filling the form until he came to the question - ''Are you circumcised?
    ‘So he asked the receptionist,
    "Is this question necessary?"
She replied: "Sir, I'm sorry, but, if you are circumcised, you aren't eligible to run for election".
He asked, "What possible difference would it make if I were circumcised?"
She replied...."It's quite simple, sir - To become a politician, you have to be a complete prick"!
