Each to there own, personally love the Magpie Café, Whitby.

Housed in the distinctive black and white building overlooking the harbour, the Magpie Café is in a prime position for you to enjoy the fabulous views of Whitby at the same time as sampling the wide selection of meals.

Whitby is a beautiful ancient fishing port situated on the North Yorkshire Coast, steeped in a wealth of tradition and seafaring history. The enchanting port and surrounding area has provided the local community, whose people have braved the harsh seas, with a dedicated supply of the finest fish.

Shame about the parking, we usually stop for the night and leave the car at the hotel.

hi shipmates, hi robpage I agree with you I was there 1970 in hull, but the chip shop has long gone, my son in law was a teacher in hull for a few years and told me it was knock down and Hull today is not the welcoming place I knew and loved , loads of sad unemployed fisherman, and strangers live there today not a very happy place... so he said...

Hi Louis my Amigo: Think Caroline Street is still going strong, but would never touch the fish. Chicken curry off the bone on chips was the norm. K.

Re the unemployment debate and my personal view as to what went wrong with it all. As we all know years ago there was only ever one wage earner in the house and this system seemed to work just fine but not much disposable income to waste on crap. So along comes womens lib demanding that they be given equal status within the workforce. Instead of one wage earner in the family there was now two which helped the economy with so much disposable income out there. Along comes the bean counters and technology to reduce the workforce and the numbers speak for themselves. Twice the amount of people looking for work while only half the positions available which leads to a two tier structure of the have's and have not's. I know here in Oz years ago a single wage earner could purchase a house and live comfortable until retirement and a mortgage would only be allowed on his flat rate of pay. Today they sign up for a mortgage using both wage's plus any other income that is coming in to be able to afford it. Surely blind Freddy can see that this will lead to disaster if overtime is cut out or one of them looses their job. I am a firm believer that it was the introduction of women to the work force that fostered greed and now we are reaping the rewards of that today.
That's the way the mop flops.

My thanks to Brian for this site.

Lad's, Re Fish & Chip post's.........., have to add: "The Bay" in Stonehaven topped the 25th National Fish and Chip Awards 2013 in London.

The "Anstruther Fish Bar & Restaurant" in St Andrews Fife another award winning one.

"The Wee Hurry" in Troon Ayrshire, and my own local........, excellent too.

#68 Les, I agree mother's/father's whoever is the lowest paid, should stay at home to raise their young children. Unfortunately the Government[s] in the UK have actively encouraged both parents to off load their children to whoever, in order that parents should work. Big mistake! Young children need
in my opinion stability from a home parent at least until they start school, never mind the two cars or exotic holidays. By the time parents have paid child minders, nanny's, au pairs, nursery's, which can amount to a sum that can equate to a second mortgage the mother [usually] is frazzled, guilty and exhausted. It's ludicrous, commonsense should tell them if it's possible to exist on one wage without the "frills" try it. Right through to the end of schooling, that way parents are aware of who they are mixing with into adulthood.......worked for me.

But the trouble these days the younger generation want to get all the good things a flash house flash car and all the modern things so the have to both go out to work and take big loans to keep up .In our day it was to start off with bringing up a family Mum stayed at home and the old man went to work and to get the things we want slowly.

ere is the opposition jumping up and down demanding the gov create more jobs, how? Jobs only exist if there is a demanbd for the product or service associated with it. No demand no job. Now we have the building trade on a full time week of 30 hours and they say ther are hard pushed to do that. Maybe if they spent less time eating all those odd foods such as Tottys and others they might get some work done. But it has been told that at lunch som eof them go for 'Fish fingers' no wonder thye are so bloody tired!
    Happy daze John in Oz.
