I did read somewhere that a lot of the debt was written off by foregoing royalties on high tech, top secret technology such as micro processors, jet engine design, nuclear reactors etc. Peter in NZ.

AMERICA has stood by us for many years and don't forget we are the only country that has invaded the united states even burning the white house down?? there is a door lintel that is left black as a reminder. the only thing I fear is on day there might be conflict between the EU and the USA and who do we stand by? remember how the first world war started with one man being assassinated that cost millions of lives .jp

#27, say what you like about the Yanks, they do remember their dead (and living) veterans with honour, here we get yobs, educated and uneducated pizzing on our memorials, don't think somehow that would happen in America, they wouldn't get a slap on the wrist like they do here, they would probably get lynched, and rightly so.

A verymoving experience to stand above the wreck knowing there are hundreds of dead Seamen underneath,
