Here is a link with dozens of photos http://news.ninemsn.com.au/national/...-destroy-homes and below are two in the Sydney Daily Telegraph supplement of many years ago, 'The Bush Reborn'. The first shows the quick regrowth that follows fire and the other shows how fire is the midwife bursting open the seedpods from which a tiny seed, encased in a flat feather like wing floats away to the ground some distance from the parent.

The cruel fire is still causing terrible heartache but in a few short weeks there will be spectacular, beautiful regrowth.

Dorothea MacKellar (necessary reading at School - and this is from that memory) wrote 'My Country' in which two verses read:

'Core of my heart, my country,
    her pitiless blue sky.
When sick at heart around us,
    We see the cattle die.
And then the grey clouds gather,
    And we shall see again,
    The drumming of an army,
    The steady soaking rain

Core of my heart, my country,
    Land of the rainbow gold.
Through flood and fire and famine,
    She pays us back threefold.
    And over the thirsty paddocks,
    Watch after many days,
    A thin vale of greenness,
    That thickens as we gaze.'

    Thanks, Richard

I love a sunburnt country, a land of sweeping plains,
Of rugged mountain ranges, of drougts and flooding rains.

One of the major problems of late for those living so close to the bush has been the "Greens' and their insistance that no clearing of bush land be done.
Sadly they have been listened to by many a Labor gov, but even the Abbos since the dawn of time knew the scrub has to be cleared at times to prevent such disasters.

The saddest thing, one of the members of the Feral Green party has blamed the current PM for this disaster as he is attempting to remove a carbon tax imposed by the last Labor gov. According to the Greens without the tax it will get worse?????

    They are quite right John,
we have to pay more taxes so they can throw the dollars bills at the flames and smother them, it is the only way to stop a bush fire, it also saves water.. I thought everyone knew that.

    All Greens should be sectioned
In Borneo they cut down all the rain forests so they could plant palm oil trees to make bio fuels to cut down on carbon.
They are so thick and stupid that they do not know that Rain Forests thrive on absorbing carbon and pump out oxygen. They world was OK until idiotic mental greens came along.
You cannot plant a Rain Forest.
    Good luck with the fires.
    Cheers
    Brian.

On the Beeb this morning they were saying the fires in NNSW were caused by a military aircraft on a routine exercise. Don't understand how that could cause a fire. I've been buzzed many a time by Tornados when driving over Stainmore on the A66 but have never seen a fire caused by low flying aircraft.
The de-forestation of many of the Indonesian Islands is a tragedy caused by our thirst for nice hardwoods. In many cases before re-planting or new growth can take place the rains cause huge mudslides which results in the underlying rock been laid bare so no vegetation can take hold.

Don't think the aircraft were being blamed John, apparently (allegedly) they were using live ammunition and stun grenades on the ground in their exercises, which of course they also do over here, nothing gets you moving like a real bullet. Guess the Government will be facing compensation from the insurance companies when they pay out, but knowing insurance companies they may well tell their unfortunate claimants to deal direct with the Government.

The news in Australia Ivan well covers the fires happening now in the Eastern States. We in W.A. have had a lot of rain the past month or so, so the usual fires we expect have not happened yet. They will occur there is no doubt about that, and unfortuanetly a lot of them will be started deliberately by the usual brainless ones. My wife a member of the C.W.A. (country womens association) is a part of a volunteer group of the Salvation Army who organize meals for the police, firefighters, and other services involved. I never have volunteered for any such work so I have told her not to wake me up when she gets called out in the early hours, joking aside volunteer groups do a great job, most of the firefighters you see on your screens are not full time professionals but members of volunteer bush brigades. We used to live in the hills here with a lot of trees and bush but after a few years of fires each season and my being away working elsewhere, we chose to build a house nearer the coast, so now live 400 meters off the Indian Ocean, if the worse comes to the worse we can always run into the sea, but there again you also stand the chance of a nobby getting a piece of you. Cheers and always be careful of where you throw your fag end if you smoke. Regards John Sabourn

Ref. The Greens. When I heard that so many had been arrested by the Russian Government and accused of Piracy, I said at last at least a government has shown some responsibility. Myself personally I hope they get the book thrown at them. They get no sympathy whatsoever from me. You are right about the misinformation being politically put out about the stupid carbon tax the brainless pre government put out. Anyone with half a mind knows we have climate change always have and always will taxing the people is just another way of raising revenue for their overspending. At least I feel a bit easier in my mind living in this great country not to have such a poor government as the last lot turned out to be. However there is still trouble for this country in the future with another attempt by a so called Union man wanting the reins of power, I forecast he was going where he is now, 4 years ago. I would rather see Clive Palmer in the hot seat than him. Cheers John Sabourn

Ah well Alf, America sneezes, the whole world catches colds. After 30 years in the fire service, 5 in the New forest, and we never had them to the extent you have them in Oz, but they take a lot of stopping, trees crowning with the fire, have seen tarmac roads just burst into flame. I feel sorry for all those guys out there, KT
