Not sure about UK but here in Oz there is a strong push for more privitisation of many services used by the public, health and education come to mind.
From the early days of gov all over the globe candidates have sought new ways to win votes. As a result they have moved away from the main basis of government, defence of the country, raising taxes to pay for this and writing the rules under which the country will operate. So we now have public housing, schools, health etc. there is nothing wrong with that providing the gov put the correct amount of tax payers money into it. However over time govs have lost the plot, some never read the script, and find money for things that are not relavant to the needs of the every day person. They exploit the trough filled with tax payers money and wonder why they are not popular. Add to this the sometimes outrageous wage claims of some unions and industries and you end up with a situation where companied can no longer make a profit. Factories close and they move off shore to countries where wages are lower. Until such times as there is a level playing field with wages and conditions the situation will not change.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Happydaze John #52, you talk about companies moving offshore to countries where because of low wages it is cheaper to make their products and enhance their profits. You would be surprised just how many companies are moving back to the UK from China, wage increases in China and cost of shipping goods back to here now makes the UK competable with China.

Rob someone probably has you in their little black book now as a probable source of income in accusing you of being a pervert in earlier years. I feel sorry for that poor Bishop or whoever he was who resigned for approaching the younger priests in his earlier years. I don't know what they would have accused him of now as same sex is now fashionably legal. What the age of consenting girls will be in years to come is any ones guess. Think what a wealth of votes there would be out there for all those moronic and under and none performing MPs if they brought the voting age down. Believe there was move afoot to give felons in jail the right to vote, what happened to that idiotic suggestion, must have been from the E.U. All these claims against molesters of 50 or so years ago is going to be a new industry. Don't suppose it has a statute of limitations on it. there must be some means of making money out of it, but suppose would have to join the back end of a very log queue by now. John Sabourn P.S. Sorry there is nothing nautical in this post, unless of course we call all the felons maritime felons. Cheers John Sabourn

Not totaly surprized Jim. They are outsourcing their clothing manufacturing to Cambodia as it is cheaper than in China.

Listening to a lawyer on radio yesterday talking about gay marriage. No Brian it will not become compulsory so you will be OK. He has looked at the new laws in a number of countries and tell us there is nothing to fear. Most have drafted a bill allowing those of alternative sexual persauions to marry but it will carry little or no legal status. Most countries who have allowed this still have the marriage act stating it is between a man and a woman. They will still be viewed by social security, pensions etc as two singles. They may be viewed as defacto but that is about all.
