    Default Alcohol Abuse

I have just been watching the BBC I PLAYER, INSIDE OUT SOUTH. 21/01/2013.
    . Regarding alcohol abuse.
I seems that Portsmouth is the worst place in Britain for Liver Disease and alcohol related deaths..

My son Richard, the Consultant Hepatologist, is in it again at the hospital,
He says the average patient drinks Nine Bottles of Vodka a week or 20 bottles of wine a week .
Loads of them are also on the cheap Cider which is also a killer.
and that only One in Ten of them is working.
That means that Nine out of Ten are using their Benefits to buy the stuff.
He then goes into Liqour Land and talks to the Owner, He shows him some sachets of alcohol that kids drop into their soft drinks to get them legless. I have never seen those before.
Just before Christmas he had to tell two sets of parents that their 16 year old daughters were not going to live more than six months, their Livers and other organs were so badly damaged that they could not have Liver transplants and so they will die soon. They had been drinking more than a bottle of Vodka a day.
What a waste of young lives. It is as bad as Drug taking and possibly more harmfull.
We all like a good bevy, but he says have about three days a week with no alcohol to let your Liver recover.
    Cheers
    Brian.

good post Kong--- be interesting to discover what sort of occupation could the 'one in ten' hold down after necking a bottle of vodka each day. (perhaps one of our politicians supping in the subsidised House of Commons Bar).

i am at present visiting my old golfing partner in hospital, he is 75 years old, a retired police inspector . his wife died at xmas 2 years ago, very suddenly, and he has hit the pop big time. when the ambulance took him into hospital he was bright yellow in colour, probably severe liver damage. He has been told he has not long to go. Such a tragedy, but being an alky is an illness, there but for the grace of god go many of us. i still like a drink, but am well aware if it starts to get out of hand. KT

    Brian.
I live near one of the large overspill estates for Portsmouth . The local One Stop and Co-op has over thirty brands of cider and less than ten beers and lagers , the popular cider is a value brand that is in 3 Litre bottles , and there are a lot that drink two bottles a day every day , topped up with a cheap vodka . They all have identical appearance , large army type greatcoat so they can do a bit of food shop lifting , all meat and cheese is security tagged , hair very lank and greasy , unwashed skin , mange riddled dog , normally a Staff or similar . I know I do get irritated by these guys , but they all smoke too , they spend monies meant for their children's food on fags and cider , the kids are encouraged to shop lift , the main food is McCain chips . They moan they cannot get a job because all the F-in Immigrants have all the F-in jobs . You wonder why I get a downer on teh unemployables , well when I thought about signing on , I was told go away , your megre pension is to much , the fact that you have forty years paid stamp and have never claimed is your fault , It sickens me , probably more than I ever let on

    Default Oh my Liver!!

Reminds me of myself many Years ago Capt, when younger i used to get through at least 4 to 5 Bottles of Vodka a Week, but amazingly i was always able to carry out my duties no matter where i was working!
This is of course nothing to brag about, and i only saw my folly many Years later, when i got the start of chrirosis of the Liver my Doctor then warned me ,but i still carried on ,i then landed up with the Heart Attack on top of it all, rushed to Hospital, and had the Operation!
I was in one hell of a state and felt like death in the Hospital,my entire Family i realised were shocked to see me like that!
Anyway that did it for me! Since that day i awoke in the Hospital Bed,i have not touched a drop ,and boy can i say how wonderful it is to be dry!
I have my good old Liver back to square one too!
I now see things clearly, have my life back and best of all no damn Hangovers!
Yes indeed the Drink can do much harm, not only to ones self, but to the Entire Family and Friends!
I also gave up smoking a long time ago!

Please dont get me wrong here,a social Drink is fine if you can do it,but with me,i cannot take a social drink, its none or the bleedin whole hog! That is i presume called "An Alcoholic" but thank the Lord it really doesnt worry me at all nowdays,in fact the smell of the stuff at times does make me feel a bit weasy!
    Thats all Folks!
    Merry Melodies!

Thanks for your story Vernon, that is the way a lot us may have been heading at times. Only in Port or on leave, but I sailed mostly on dry ships so the Liver had a good chance of recovering.
My son Richard, says it is a big problem, many people just do not realize how damaging it really is. He does enjoy a glass or two of wine at weekends but he drinks a few glasses of water with it. It stops the Liver from dehydrating and damage.
    Cheers
    Brian.

It is all about revenue mate, alcohol brings in more than tobacco and whilst there are not many politicians who smoke there are plenty of them who drink.
    Happy daze John in Oz.
