    Cool Britain For Sale.

    Hi Jim.
Where the hell have you been for the past
    15/20 years,maybe more.The Country has
been sold out to the do gooders, the politicaly
correct brigade and all the other unelected
voices of the people who possibly have done
nothing to benifit this once Great Britain,I
wonder if we have past the "sell by date" or
is it at all possible for us to return to the days
that a lot of people gave their lives for.

It was Harold Wilson , He also commissioned the Beeching Report in 1965 , closed huge chunks of British mining in the same era , He never seems to get the blame because by the time the effects were felt first Edward Heath was in Power , then Margaret Thatcher . As I have said many times , I came from a strong mining and railway area in derbyshire , and I watched Old Labour stuff their supporters , so I never trusted New Labour either , at least you know the Conservatives are going to stuff you , they are just more open about it ,

Briefly, before I came to Canada, I worked for Standard Triumph.
Coventry was full of car factories.
I could see the demise coming while I worked there.
I have always been in favour of unions, but what I saw there was disgusting.
The convener would shut down the whole place on some pretence or other, so he could go south to visit his fancy lady.
Good pay while you worked, but if you were on strike for however long, it wasn't good pay.
That was part of the reason I came to Canada.
The years I have been here, I see the same thing happening.
    In the words of Churchill.
If we do not understand history, we will be bound to repeat it.
    [Not an accurate quote]
Some years back I went home. Guess what. No car factories left!!

    On another note.
I'm sure one of you can answer the question I have been asking myself.
In another time of conflict, when conscription may be introduced.
Will the Thousands of young ******s be called-up along with every other religion.?
Have a feeling it may be a silly question.
    Den.

I think they would join up, if only to get Miltitary and Weapon Training so they will be ready for the Jihad that is coming.

Admirable sentiments Brian but I would think most of us now are rightly more concerned about specification and quality rather than it’s country of origin. If it’s got the name we want on it then that’s what matters. I too have a Dyson vac and it’s terrific-I know it’s a British invention, but even now, unless I go and have a look it,I couldn’t tell you where it’s made-the name Dyson is good enough for me-and if by chance if I knew beforehand it happened to be made in the Philippines, then I wouldn’t have demurred purchasing it for one made in the U.K.

I remember my British cars of the 70’s and 80’s - a Longridge -built Leyland Mini with no underfloor rust protection- probably hurriedly ‘passed’ by a quality controller on his way to an emergency pre-strike union meeting; a brand new Speke(Liverpool) built Triumph TR7 with dodgy electrics (I didn’t risk any night-driving as sometimes only one headlight would pop-up Cyclops-style,or occasionally none at all-I was lucky,--some cars burst into flames immolating their owners one hears.)Production was later moved to Coventry, but woe betide you if you were unlucky enough to get a ‘Friday afternoon lemon’ as they were known. Then I also had a Dagenham built Ford Capri GT-- interior door handles breaking off in your hand and the plastic lacerating your palm (thought I‘d bleed to death),or failing to open at all-,particularly damaging to a young man’s confidence when trying to impress his ‘new lady’ -she waiting in the pouring rain with newly done hair, broken manicured nails attempting to open her door, and finally laddering her tights on the gear lever because she had to slide in from your (driver’s )side..

No.I went and stayed foreign-particularly VW Golfs and a BMW and hate to say it Japanese Toyotas. Ever so reliable though with good quality control.

    So British made-oh woe !
    Where did you go?
    We all know…
    Now British no more.

    Default Britain for sale.

David Williams I did'nt quite get your post 31# I have'nt been anywhere the past 20 years I'm still well aware of whats been going on.Robpage I know you are a great fan of Maggie, she did many things wrong and I think the worst sin that she ever committed was selling off the housing stock.Great yes for those people that bought them at the knock down prices and made them a lot of money the legacy is now that our up and coming generation cant afford to buy, the prices of houses are beyond their reach so they are committed to a life of rental which they will never own and pay through the nose rents. She must be,and is,the worst Prime Minister that this country has ever had!!!!Gulliver I found your post about British cars amusing you were either unlucky or just having a laugh.Dennis 33# my uncle was a timed served baker and confectioner here in Liverpool he joined the Merch and jumped ship in Montreal in the 30's.He visited bakeries and baked cakes etc from his own recipes the end product being that he was the supplier of the ingredients necessary to make the cakes. He was doing very well untill Diefenbaker slapped an import tax on everything entering Canada,he was priced out of a job.Gulliver was praising the foreign goods,I think that we should take a leaf out of Diefenbakers book and slap a 40% import tax on all foreign goods entering this country then we may get back onto a level playing field.
    Regards.

Default not a level playing field

Hi shipmates , Hi Jim Brady you have it right, but why would big business owned by the few faceless mega rich people tax themselves??? They make goods abroad to make more money not less.{How many chinese workers are killed or injured daily in factorys/ mines/ ship buliding with no come backs to the owners} ? We have no choice to buy goods made in the U.K? Many goods made here have many non U.K. parts, Food factorys {Cakes} in the U.K. use chemicals made abroad and put in the food , G.M. foods has been sold here for years without people knowing.

as all of us have been around for a few years bartered in many countries seen how the other half live why did we get in this mess in the first place we can't blame the global economy other lands are prospering and we can often read between the lines as travelers? have we been ripped off? have we hitched are wagon to dead horses? are we dragging our anchor? the answers are all there .was it an idea that got out of hand and the goal posts moved by many fields by bureaucrats that are most probably making millions looking busy with under the table deals with businessmen? i think so i also think we as a nation should say no to this crowd that want to rule over us and push us so far we will become a third world land. this is just my view is it yours as well????jp

Far from it Jim , I cannot stand any of the thieving egotistical members of the trough . But I bought our first house off of Southampton Council , and so did most of the serving labour members of the council , ten when in power forgot themselves and hypocritically stopped the scheme . I don't like Hypocrisy and self serving politicians , which to my view is most of them , but I have a particular dislike for the Labour politicians who pretend to represent the working man , when as sons of millionaires they have never worked a day in their privileged lives , I have said before recently there is a two party state , Red Tories and Blue Tories . If Mrs T did anything well she sorted out the mining industry , where the working conditions were atrocious but the union leaders were playing politics rather than representing their men . My family were in the 1894 Derbyshire Miners Lock out when the employers tried to starve the men back to work , so I was bought up on the bitter politics of the Unions , to see them ruined by the clever educated output of Ruskin college , the men who took gongs and honour and still sold their members down the river . I have now been a member of various trade unions without a break for the last forty five years , Thatcher also sorted out , with loss of life the Argentinians , and I when I think that Blair almost gave Gibraltar sneakily back to Spain , then I wonder why he was ever elected . I vote selfishly for the local candidate who I think will do the best for me . The working man has been sold down the river all his working life , first by the employers , then by the men he employed to defend his rights and conditions , so Mrs T , well she was a good choice on the day , Blair and Brown never were .
