Whish i had the same priviledge living on the Isle of Wight, (joke), however i seem to have opened a whole can of messroom worms on this subject, but have seen no CONCRETE evidence to support all the claims, but am enjoying the messroom banter, right or wrong!!, lovely to be at sea again!! KT

Well I might just try my hand at that next time. Still got a British driving licence abd NH card, all with my last known address on them and a British passport about 30 or so years out of date. Could I claim illegal status and get the benifits?
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Well i dont know about that John, but as a matter of interest and my last word on this subject, you will see that Gulliver quoted from the Uk gov site, but i think he must have been a lower deck lawyer at some time because he carefully chose the parts he wished to see. However, on that site a British citizen living abroad can register for a postal vote, and can vote by post for up to 15 years, see REGISTER FOR POSTAL VOTE on that site. Best regards to you in i hope sunny Oz, KT

to the best of my knowledge an ex pat in spain can register with the consulate to vote in the uk elections.judging by the number of "letters to the editor" in the local english newspaper the are many expats down here voting.
In a previous posting someone was complaining about ex pats getting winter fuel allowance.Doesnt he know that it gets cold at nights here in the winter and as a matter of interest I can see snow on the mountains from my terrace for several months of the year.I have to admit the mountains are 60 kilometers away.
By the way. Before retiring I paid huge amounts in tax and being self employed I didnt get the benefit of a state earnings related pension, also,mr brown cost me about 20% of my private pension fund when he slapped a tax on pension fund gains.
Life down here isnt all a bed of roses. We have to shelter from the sun

Bloody hell John have we not inflicted enough strife in this country without interfering with the UK well. We do not have a good track record with with the pathetic lot we have ended up with. Watched the QA show last night and starting to lean towards the Katter party at least he speaks with passion without party shackles restricting him.
That's the way the mop flops.

My thanks to Brian for this site.

    Default Proposed Retirement Age.

Gulliver,Davey everything that you posted on 68# is a load of lies and rubbish not on your behalf I must add but from the Dot.Gov or whatever site you got it from.Put it this way that local councils send out the electoral register forms to all homes with the title Householder.Who ever is living there completes the form and returns it they are now on the electoral roll and eligible to vote.To give you an idea in recent elections in Greenwich 23% of the votes cast were made by non British Citizens. The Government are well aware of this both Labour and Tory but choose todo nothing about it.Put it this way the council send out these forms mainly for their interest in claiming the Community Charge (old word rates) from the occupant and I dont think anywhere on that form does ask for your nationality. When you think about it its a licence to print money, our foreign friends could list say four adults (ghosts)who dont exist but exist for Social Security purpose only.I imagine when the Poll Tax was introduced the number of residents in many houses shrunk!!!
I imagine I dont know for sure but I bet the Respect Candidate (George Galloway's crowd) are responsible for that 23% turnout,
    Regards.

    Default Vote NO ! Today!

No Keith,Gulliver was never a lower deck lawyer, and Gulliver was only highlighting the points he wanted to so folks will see what that site says. and to get across to them the rules. I think you thought they were highlighted as things that Keith should conveniently ignore or skip over? ! .!So let's not be facetious and agree to disagree until we know for sure.

Last word-perhaps the ex-pats that John(Sutton) knows in Spain must be maintaining a residence both in U.K. and Spain (or more likely those Brits who rent a Spanish place for six months of the year),that's why they can vote-because,unless that directgov.site is wrong, you are entitled to vote in U.K. elections only if you are on the electoral roll, and to do that you have to be living in the U.K. (as I keep saying).

Like others here though,I still feel it is very wrong that non-domiciled Brits can help to shape our country politically if they don't reside here ,or have no intention of residing here...

    All the Best

I would rather non Domiciled Brits voting than the Tribes of the Khyber who always seem to have three voting cards to my one.

As I said Brian they could list as many names as they wish on that form and would have voting cards.
