Sorting the Vote...

Well John,.if you read my post-you have to be on the electoral register to vote in this country .I suppose that you are getting round that one by voting by proxy but then to vote you still have to be normally domiciled in this country (and on the electoral roll, which means you must live in this country.)
Maybe you're getting away with it because you or someone acting for you is putting your name on the electoral register notification, remember ,this notification is sent out every year, and if you include your name as being resident at a particular U.K. address, and you are not (because you're living in Holland) ,then I would suggest you might be committing an offence.
Also, you say you have not taken Dutch citizenship, but nevertheless the Netherlands are still EU, and citizens of the EU are not eligible for voting in U.K.anyway.
So now John, seems like you may not be eligible to vote anywhere-GB or the Netherlands!

Voting U.K.....

Well, that would be an offence, because British citizen living abroad or not,you still have to be on the electoral roll in U.K. to be eligible to vote,so someone who is completing an electoral registration(normally yearly)declaring he is resident in U.K. when in actual fact he is not, because he's actually resident in Australia would be in the wrong, because the declaration says something to the effect that 'I declare that the persons named here' are resident at this address'....

not knowing much about the workings of British abroad voters you may live for years in a foreign country but if you are in any distress you are still entitled to help from the consulate of great Britain so that would have to be looked at as well?jp

Well Gulliver, I am not sure on this, but it seems that my brother in law is sent the electoral register from here, and as an ex police chief officer would be very surprised if he is doing anything illegal. I am sure that people working abroad on contracts still vote, so i am not convinced you are right on this, but with all the people on this site i am sure someone will have the definitive answer on this one. I think we established at the beginning of this subject that you need to be on the electoral role, so as the other person beside my b-i-law is John Cassels i will stick with my more concrete evidence Regards KT

I bet this will make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside!
Can you imagine working for a company that only has a little more than 635 employees, but, has the following employee Statistics..
29 have been accused of spouse abuse
7 have been arrested for fraud
9 have been accused of writing bad cheques
17 have directly or indirectly bankrupted at least 2 businesses
3 have done time for assault
71 cannot get a credit card due to bad credit
14 have been arrested on drug-related charges
8 have been arrested for shoplifting
21 are currently defendants in lawsuits
84 have been arrested for drink driving in the last year
And collectively, this year alone, they have cost the British tax payer £92,993,748 in Expenses!!!
Which organisation is this?
It's the 635 members of the House of Commons.
The same group that cranks out hundreds of new laws each year designed to keep the rest of us in line.
What a bunch of idiots we have running our country!
It says it all... And just to top all that they probably have the best 'corporate' pension scheme in the country!! If you agree that this is an appalling state of affairs, please pass it on to everyone you know - including your local MP.

Proposed Retirement Age.
I find it strange that people not living in this country still want to vote, what is in it for them?Maybe John Cassels will tell us the reason he wishes to cast his vote here but has not wished to live here for over 30 years. I take exception to the fact that somebody living in the Netherlands,Australia or anywhere else other than this country can have a say in my destiny.I think I'l get in touch with my MP and ask just how many votes are cast by people not domiciled in this country.Who decides which constituency you vote in as you must have one to vote for a certain politician.
Regards.

Like many others on this site I find the voting system a bit of a minefield. Some people are saying although they live overseas they are entitled to a UK vote. Explain this then. In 1978 I went to live on the Isle of Man (not exactly overseas)and during the 26 years that I lived there not once was I allowed to vote in any UK election. For the first ten years I had to have a work permit and when the 10 years were up I was informed by the Work Permit Department that I was now classed as a Manx Worker and a permit was no longer required. During all this time I was still a British citizen but still could not vote. The Isle of Man is classed as a Crown Dependancy, has a Governor appointed by the reigning Monarch and is 30 minutes away by air from Liverpool. How can a person living on the Continent holding a British citizenship be allowed to vote when I was not allowed to? I have to add that at the time I was happy the way things were. I chose to live on the Island and accepted all the pros and cons. Just a thought.
Regards
John

What 'more concrete evidence 'is that Keith?
Anyway,I smiled at your statement "and as an ex police chief officer would be very surprised if he is doing anything illegal". My Dad was,and my brother still is a senior police officer, and it's amazing how many little irregularities that I know of ,shall we say..just happened? .
Never trust a politician..... or a senior policeman comes to mind.
All the Best
