8d a pint Wrexham lager on Cunard mid fifties,
Shilling on the P & o, Carlsberg, but we were told that once
we hit the Australian coast it would go to two bob
we thought no one would be buying any of that
(Swan lager) the queues in the 'pig' were never
    ending Oronsay 1958.

In the Market Diner in New York, when there was FOUR DOLLARS to the pound, beer was ten cents a glass.
40 Glasses of beer for one pound. Then Stafford Scripps devalued the Pound to TWO DOLLARS to the pound, so only 20 glasses of beer to the Pound.

Think a pint in the Pig on UCL was nine pence.

But now, beer here in Oz you are looking at around $4.5 upwards for a pot of heavy.
Some of the speciallity ones are dearer.
But size and cost varies between states.

Then we get Cascade from Tassie, more like some kind of bloody lemonade, not for real drinkers.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

John, i once read a book on the Whale factory ships, at sea for long periods, and making their own booze went on all the time. There was a rumour that a certain brand of shoe polish and raisins was always shipped aboard in large quantities, how they made booze out of that beats me. The only experience i had was on the South America run on the St Merriel, we had an all German/Dutch deck crew, except me, and they always had a large stone flagon of Bols gin on the newsroom table, and frequently cut up oranges and put them in the flagon, they claimed it kept the brew going. I never indulged as i hate gin, kt

    JP
Working with Norwegians,. Swedes, fins, possibly because of the high price of alcohol in their own country, they always seemed to have knowledge of how to either make or obtain illicit booze. On chemical tankers they would use cargo samples of ethanol or even methanol mixed with tinned fruit to make 100% proof booze that could not only blow your head off but cause serious damage to your liver, there was one case where the chief officer died after drinking the alcohol from the magnetic compass bowl. I never sailed on a totally dry ship but even so I had a number of incidents where Scandinavian officers either made the alcohol as above or brought on board what could only be described as moonshine in their luggage on joining.

We had a junior forth engineer who made his from Pineapple skins, kept the bucket with them in his wardrobe stunk the place out.

One of the cooks made a brew with Prunes, yeast and Surgical spirits.
Good I was told for cleaning Brass as well.

Must have been a posh outfit, I can only recall canned pineapple, and that was infrequent.

Church Key was what we called the spanner.

Standing order was 500 cases of Tennent's to be loaded first.
