#37.. John there was actually a skipper with North Star safety vessels in the North Sea and based in Aberdeen who was supposed to have only one eye and a false leg. Maybe others on site may be able to confirm this ? However how does this comply with the standard of fitness set out by the BSF ? The same BSF wanted to make me redundant in 1986/87 because I couldn’t read the bottom line on the eyesight card . They obviously wanted rid of people as cheaply as possible . I went and got half moon glasses so as to pass the eye test and another 16 years at sea, not however through the BSF as Chose to go elsewhere , as they soon became a nonentity. The BSF consisted of shipowners and government with a small representation from the seaman’s union. What a mixture of unreliable people they turned out to be. The BSF was replaced out here by the maritime unions and what a difference that made to the welfare of all seamen. You would have to be a good company’s man to think different.

#43. My son Des is a computer analyst and programmer and lives in the uk , it must have been a conducive job salary wise as he informed me at Xmas on the phone that he had just retired , at the age of 56. When I was 56 I was counting the dollars and years to 65. Luckily I was living in Australia by that time , and had to get 10 years of working to be able to claim anything from government and also be a citizen. I just made it. Can’t imagine the difference in life styles between the UK and here at that time in history. Cheers JS

Like you John I missed out on retirement money, got a small Super pay out from the Sydney Water board at 62, then went on the pension supplemented by a job on a Ferry until I was 70, cash in hand, a job I enjoyed. It was just as well we had no mortgage.

Re the politics ref. In this post and as have been away for some time. Have only just seen a small reference in the International Express re Tony Bliar and his recent acclaim to fame. The last I can remember of those against was about 737, 000 against and the target was then 1 million. Nothing in the media about this ? So is this just another wishful thinking and those others just waiting for it to go away , and no action once again by those sitting on the benches of power. JS

Cappy young lad, reading the story about the one legged yachtsman tells me why you had a passion for Mary.
Obviously something about one legged persons tickles your fancy.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

The one legged yachtsman was Mary’s brother, it was a family trait the one leggedness. Although the yachtsman maybe have been able to claim two if of the boastful type. JS

    Update on Little Micky Gove.
He was due to appear on TV to have his ears tickled by an interviewer but could not be found. Later he was discovered stuck in a lift, missing the interview.
A perfect choice to replace King Clown as leader of the Tory party.
