There is no way to find his Dis. A number if his records are not online. My advice to Janet would be to obtain his CRS 10 from the National Archives in Kew. If it has survived, it should be held in piece BT 382/560. This file is best obtained by visit to Kew as it is expensive to try and obtain online. If going to obtain this then also get the final Crew Agreement for VOLTURNO as previously mentioned.
One thing that is puzzling me a little is that you mention service on the trawler HMT TANGO. These ships were manned by the RN/RNR/RNVR or fishermen on T124T Agreements but not generally by merchant seamen. Can you tell me how you know he served on her and when.

Hugh

Re: william fairbrace
Hi Janet.
Not that this will be any use to you, but the SS Volturno of 3,434 tons was sunk by German aircraft on June 23rd 1943 2 miles off Cape St Vincent.

Re: william fairbrace
I wonder if Janets father was RN and not MN.There is quite a bit about the Volturno on the SN site and in fact Janet posted on there in 2014 saying her father was put ashore in Madeira in 1941 suffering with I think was black water fever. There was quite a large RN presence on the Volturno I think.

Re: william fairbrace
thank you Jim, yes I think my dad may have gone over to the royal at this time i'm not sure but its a possibility, he was in the MN since the age of 14 well sort of he stowed away on a ship at London docks, they kept him on as he was a good & willing worker so when he officially became a Merchant seaman I don't know, thanks for your help with this info.

Janet,
See my #11 obtain his CRS 10.
If he later transferred to the RN then you need to obtain his service record from the Ministry of Defence - https://www.gov.uk/guidance/requests...ervice-records

Re: william fairbrace
Thank you Hugh I will try that site, I am sorry that I am a bit vague on dads war years, I only heard bits and pieces years ago but when I asked him about his ship he said it was the HMS Tango and others that only had no's not names but he never said what those no's were.
Thanks again for your input I know more now than I did so I am grateful to you all.
Regards Janet
