    Smile Abadan club

    Hi Albi,
Thanks for your info. Just looked up your photograph of Abadan seamans club pool. Looks smaller than I recall but guess after sharing a cabin on a BTC tanker for months open space like that was fantastic eh ? Reckon it was SIXTY TWO years since I saw and swam there, remember those big chilled bottles of beer that went down so well and even the Tombola. Makes you feel old eh, ah well Eighty next birthday and still going strong.
Best of luck and thanks again.

    Default Old salt

British Might was my first ship as an apprentice. Joined her in December 1945. later sailed on British Bombardier and British Promise left her 1951 for dry cargo.

Masters I sailed with were Page, Marvin, JHO Jones, Faulkner, Ward, and Killer Simpson.

The Soldier and Sailor were WW 1 "War" boats and never went much further than Aden and Bombay. They were slow enough to be able to catch fish off the Kuria Morea islands.

The British Sovereign and the dumb barge Frisia did lightering off the Shatt al Arab bar in my time, and the tugs were good jobs. I quite enjoyed Abadan as I had some friends there. It was better than Salt End. I was never on the Indian crewed ships on the coast.

    Best wishes and Happy Christmas

    Cool Les Gray R540311

Hi Castlemain.Looking at the photo's you posted brought back some memories for me.I sailed in British Sailor March to May 1957.Then in British Soldier (The newer one) July 1957 to Jan 1958.They were classed as British Super Tankers then.I payed off them both in drydock Falmouth, they did not ask any of us Donkey/Greasers to work by as I would have stayed on them longer. The best feeders I was ever on.All the Best.Les.

Was there a British Workman or something similar. Rumour had it when in the 50"s the crew over the bow painting changed it to British Workhouse. Believe there was all hell to pay. JS

Hi Vernon, they had a huge fleet when I first went to sea. As said earlier there was usually at least 6 at a time lying on the River berths and in the drydocks at Smiths Drydocks in North Shields. Days never to be seen again. Think I asked once before when did they change to BP. Cheers JS

    In 1981 JS

BP Shipping is the maritime arm of British headquartered global oil company, BP. The unit covers the marine transport, logistics and insurance requirements of all BP's global activities.

Formed in 1956 as BP Tanker Company Ltd, its roots go back to the British Tanker Company Ltd, which was formed to carry products for the Anglo-Persian Oil Company. It is hence the oldest continuous business unit in the BP group. The company changed its name to BP Shipping in 1981 to encompass its marine insurance activities, and in 2006 transported 251.7 million tonnes of crude and products, representing around 5% of the world's sea borne oil movements
