Smile Can anyone help? BP British Comet

    Hi there,

I wonder if anyone could help? My husband has befriended a gentleman who was onboard BP British Comet in around 1967.

The gentleman is looking for old photographs of British Comet and I've drawn a complete blank - I can't even find her listed, yet I'm sure I've seen her name mentioned in some of the threads here.

If anyone had a photo that they would be willing to scan so that we could print it out and give it to him, I'd be very grateful.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Duffy

    Default John Callon

    Hello Duffy,

I don't have a picture of the British Comet, but i can tell you that this vessel picked up the survivors from the Bibby Line OBO Ocean Bridge after an explosion on board her in the Bay of Biscay. The survivors were landed at the Spanish port of Corunna. I know this as I was flown out with one of the Operations Managers, by Bibbys, to assist in the repatriation of the crew from Ocean Birdge. We boarded the British Comet to inform the survivors as what was going to happen once we got them ashore. I do remember all of them praising the efforts of the BP Comet crew in ensuring that they were well looked after and giving them clean items of their own clothing to wear and even giving up their bunks for the Bibby lads to sleep in.
The Ocean Bridge was salvaged and ended up in Scott Lithgows Yard on the Clyde were she was repaired. I sailed on the vessel after the refit after having worked her in Yard. Hope you find your photograph.
    Regards,
    John Callon.

As I remember, there were six 35,000 tonners built in Italy for BP. I was led to believe that they were some sort of compensation to BP for war losses.

I served on the British Signal as assistant steward for three trips in the early 60's.

The others were British Comet, British Star, British Lantern, British Light, and British Beacon

    Default British Comet

I sailed on the British Comet out of Milford in Feb 68, paid off in Dunkirk just befor Christmas that year. I was catering(Pantry Boy). Surprised there are not more photo's about. If I remember correctly she was the first ship to be resupplied by helicopter off Cape Town, this was during the time Suez was closed and we had to go round the long way.
