    Hi Stewart
The Iolair , yes i remember both chief stewards Banger Benson and Ken Mclean, I joined her July 82, maybe you were on the opposite shift, although we must have been on at some point together., was that right ? It was already in Brest when I Joined, and I cant remember leaving and going to the Forties ,I must have left there and rejoined in the north sea.My memory is a bit hazy ,it was a long time ago . However I do remember that some of the shoreside catering staff were on when we joined right enough, You will need to get your discharge book out and check when you joined her. We went to Rotterdam for a time as well , were you on it then, Must have been for repairs or something.
    Keep in touch
    regards Rae

    Default The Iolair

Hi Rae I looked on Sunday for my book could not find it, I have seen it so my memory must be as bad as yours or I am catching up with your age. Anyway you must have taken the Iolair out from the shipyard, I think it was Camel Lard on the Clyde therefore you would have joined before me as I was not at Rotterdam on he, we went Brest then Falmouth were I was living at the time, could see my house but could not get ashore, then went to North Sea. Yes you are right Banger Benson, I remember he went on holiday to Italy and came back with great ideas for the menu! Individual lasagne in Sugar bowls, I really did enjoy making 150 to 200 individual lasagnes from scratch including making the lasagne pasta and cutting it out to put in the sugar bowls, the night shift did pass very quick, Ken Mclean, I am lead to believe that he went to the North Sea to dry out possible that’s why he was nick named (mad Mclean on our shift) now there’s two name that are blasts from the past, your memory can not be that bad Rae. Catch you later Stewart

    Hi Stewart
Hope all is well in your hotel, maybe we will come up there one day, The Iolair, yea it was built on the clyde, but it was Scott Lithgow in Port Glasgow ,I could see it from Helensburgh. It was definately Brest I joined. As I mentioned before we used to go to the marina bar, and i would play the guitar and we would all have a good sing song. The owner liked us cos we entertained his punters and would give us a lot of free drink. were you not there then ?? Then he did this big party for a brand new yacht and asked me to sing at it, which I did .
Do you remember Jim Sinclair, he was a second cook as well , he contacted me on this site. he was dennis's back to back.I think he said he joined in 1983. I left in early 84 so dont remember much of Jim. The reason i remember some names is that i kept a book of everywhere i went and i would note the chief stewards names.
The Shoush, do you remember much about her.I have a lot of good memories about all my time with BP it was a great life really wasn't it. Who would've thought it would have all more or less ended the way it did eh. any way I'm off again,
    regards Rae
