Default Identifying a Cap Badge and Insignia

    Hello,

I'm new to this forum, but it seems like the right place to ask this question. I'm trying to identify the cap badge that my Great Grandfather is wearing in this photograph. There seems to be a lion of some kind in the area that usually features the crown. Does anyone know which company this belongs to?

The photo was taken in 1946. His name was William Noel Dawson. He worked for the Royal Mail Steam Packet Co. in the 1920s and then for BTC during WWII, where he was promoted to Master. The last record I have of him lists him as Master of the British Merit in December 1944.

So if anyone can help me identify this cap badge, it would be extremely helpful and much appreciated.

    Thank you,

    Paul

    Hello Paul and welcome,

British Tanker Company although I can't place the lion atop the badge but the lion is certainly part of the company logo.

Thanks Keith. To insert an image you need to have it hosted somewhere else, then add the link by clicking on the photo icon (2nd row 5th from the left)

Thanks Hugh, that helps! Still very curious why that lion is there. Will keep trying to find a later record of him working for BTC. Makes sense though, his son later married the daughter of a BTC Chief Engineer.

Definitly a BTC cap badge, The Lion comes from the BTC house flag which was three lions of the Persian type, supposed to have been a trbiute to the old Shah of Persia, for consessions they recieved. Or thats how I was told it. Cheers Albi

    Ray,
At first sight it appears that Captain Dawson is wearing the "executive loop" of a Royal Navy officer but I have seen references to other companies using this insignia. Here is a photo of Captain Elford of ss CERAMIC for example.

Thank you for that , it is a bit confusing, as only the cap badge can be certain to verifies Merchant Navy,
