    # 19. Doc I totally agree with you, I sailed on the Union Castle line, as a Tourist Class winger, A Tourist Class bedroom steward, and a First Class Pantry man, and have nothing to say but I had a great few years on the Windsor Castle, my final ship, I came ashore in May 1963, as my wife was going to have a baby, I wish I could have stayed longer.

    Great times with them Bill
I was First Class Asst Stwd, Tourist Class Galloper (Stwd) and did Bar Work on two of my Ships as well.
Never a dull moment, hard Work at times (Well most times actually) but at least can say at the end of each trip, both Mail Run and Round Africa Runs , got quite a good Payoff, plus Tips which i always found were way above what i actually earned in Salary.
Some great Ports visited along the ways too, and met plenty of nice Folk!

Nothing like it in them days, what a great experience we all had!

    Doc,

I have absolutely nothing against UCL, I would say that all my posts about UCL have in the main have been jocular and in response to others and I know many enjoyed the regular runs and predictability of timetable sailing and arrivals. Lets face it UCL would probably, nay in all certainty, never have employed me in an officer position with my Yorkshire pudding accent anyway.

When in serious mode I only comment on companies I have sailed with, as one man's meat is another man's poison. I was told that Ropner's was the worst company in the world to sail with, I found them to be far superior in every aspect to the cargo-liner/Liner companies I have sailed with, the only problem was there was no timetable, you sailed with no idea of when you would be back or where going in the interim, but you did see the world.

If I have inadvertently upset anyone with my remarks about UCL then I sincerely apologise, I shall desist mentioning them forthwith, and if I do stray then rap my knuckles but remember age does tend to lead one inadvertently astray memory wise. or

Yes nothing wrong with UCL, I did well out of them and met some great people, one met in 1961 and we still keep in contact, he is in UK.
Yes Bill you had the second pursers table table on the Windsor with the mad Dutchman as head waiter and Tony Talavera his assistant.

Would do it all again, and again if we could.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

The control of discharge of any waste from a ship falls under the IMO MARPOL convention. In 1988 annex V covering the discharge of plastic, food waste, sewage etc was introduced along with regulations covering port waste reception facilities. This annex has been further strengthened covering such items dunnage and bulk cargo sweepings.

Lewis, on pay off the quickest method of squaring the ship up was binged through the porthole all the dining gear, or so was said, i never experienced that myself, as i was peggy in the deck crew, but that was the rumour from the catering dept
