Re: abbreviation
#10... as this answer says , is a good answer, proof of the many mistakes made in documentary work is there in my own family birth certificate records , where the surname had even been spelt wrong . Spell checkers and better education of the three Rs is not too far in the past. JS
PS even modern mistakes if you look at your Keyboard the I is just above the K , I quite often hit the wrong button, a harassed clerk may be more inclined to not read what he had wrote and let it go. JS

Re: abbreviation
We live in a world of abbreviations. It’s even worse today with the advent of text messages on mobile phones I beleive, I wouldn’t have a clue on what most meant. Not having a mobile phone. I wasn’t brought up with having to stay in contact with someone all the time and have no intention of breaking the habits of a lifetime. At sea everything that could possibly be abbreviated was, this probably had its route cause as cheapness when sending radio messages. Even the Chief Engineer had to change his nationality and became Cheng. JS

Re: abbreviation
Reference to abbreviations your 3 most important radio telephone messages at sea are abbreviations taken from French sayings being in the order of importance Mayday, pan pan, securitay Securitay..,coming down in the scale of things the old SOS commonly thought of as short for Save Our Souls , I prefer to think of as Senior Ordinary Seaman who knows he may of been the cause of the distress call. Re: abbreviation
One of the major problems with any written item of that era is the way spelling was used.
Some words were spelled differently to that of today.
Also the pens used were in some instances still quills and some writers liked to write with some flourish.
If you want to see some similar problems which could drive you mad, try doing the family tree and go back to some census details of the era.

Re: abbreviation
Yep done that a long time ago John and boy there were some real crazy writings on Family Trees. But must say that in those days the Hand writing was very good at times especially with the Noblemen of the Years!
Cheers
Reminds me of the old School days with Pen and Ink Wells on the small Desks we had! But it was fun using the Pen ad nibs!
