information about a ww2 merchant navy captain
Hello everyone,,i have a ww2 uniform dated 1943 beloging to a captain A .G. RUSSELL ,, WITH the numbers 4806 ,, he had the 39-45 medal the atlantic star ,the pacific star and the defense medal with oak leaf... it would be great to find out what ships he was on and what he got up to,,, also have a small suitcase with cunard labels on showing that he traveled first class on the queen mary in the early sixties ,,, any information would be very helpfull,,, thankyou all

We would need a wee bit more info if possible any ideas as to where he came from? His Year of Birth? That Number does not point to anything in particular as far as identifying him ,as Discharge Numbers (If that may be part of it) will have around that time ( possibly mid 1940's to late 1950's) have had 6 digits and also possibly with a prefix as well normally an R

Many thanks for the help so far,,, his great coat and suit were made in liverpool and still hang on the original hangers...sorry but i have no other details ,,, its just a great piece of history that deserves to be remembered... thanks paul

Have just found an address on the suitcase, capt,a.russell 8 rosett gardens flood street london sw1.... suitcase has the original letters l.c.r. in gold writing,, poss his parents at one time or wife... has the shipping line he worked for on the label also,,, will try to read it with a magnifying glass later...thankyou all

The Cunard label on the case has a return address of PORT LINE LTD LONDON,, DATED 1960 so presume he was working for them at around this time,, cheers all

Captain A G Russell was a Port Line senior Master who was also a Director of the company. He also wrote and printed a book "Port Line" published in the 1960's predicting the demise of the company
