Re: SS Sea Robin No. 180909
Thank you so much for your responses. I am putting a file together for my family.
My dad's first voyage was on the Clan MacDonald in 1942 - he contracted Smallpox in July 1942 and spent time recovering in the North Head Quarantine Station in Sydney, returning home to Barrhead in November 1942. I have a very detailed file from the National Archives of Australia including a crew list and correspondence/telegrams outlining the outbreak of smallpox (Dennis Barrington - radio operator) was diagnosed mid July 1942 at Freemantle from Bombay. He went right back out on the MV Modavia December 31, 1942 and was torpedoed in Feb '43.
He also spent time on the Empire Benefit, Empire Cromer and Fort Tadoussac. My dad told many stories of his time at sea - I wish I had written more information down as he passed away in 1989.

Re: SS Sea Robin No. 180909
image.jpgHi Catherine
I'm currently researching the life of a Polish soldier Wladyslaw Najduch, born 1923. Having been taken by the Soviets to forced labour in Siberia in 1939, he made his way to Africa then italy where he fought at Monte Cassino and other italian battles. The reason for my reply? Wladyslaw took many photographs in the 1940s including his voyage to the UK from italy on 7th August 1946.......on the SS Sea Robin which I am sure later became the Jacob Luckenbach(1947?) and sank after being in collision off the coast of San Fran Cisco

Hope you got my earlier reply, including a pic on board Sea Robin. I have also found another after it had a change of name when afterWW2 it sailed out of USA.

Re: SS Sea Robin No. 180909
Have photographs on board SS Sea Robin, and yes I agree because the superstructure etc appears identical with Jacob Luckenbach which sank after a collision off the coast of San Francisco. (oil from her bunkers caused environmental problems many years later)

Re: SS Sea Robin No. 180909
Yes Catherine it only a pity that you had not taken any notes of your fathers wartime life at sea mind you after the war we did not worry about it and it if was not for some of the guys on this site and for some of our families
Little was mentioned about the wartime life of the Merchant Navy and it is onlyin the last few years it is coming to be thought of
