Like the cast in yet another maritime drama, the French Line's Liberte was a near-loss and plays a part in our new book The Andrea Doria & Other Recent Passenger Ship Disasters.
A near tragedy: During a fierce eastern Atlantic gale, in November 1946, the 936-ft long former German liner Europa, by then in French hands as the renamed Liberte, was ripped from her moorings at Le Havre. The liner rammed the wreckage of a sunken liner, the Paris (burned out & capsized in April 1939), and then all but capsized completely. Fortunately, the 51,000-grt Liberte was righted but for a time rested on the harbor bottom followed by salvage and repair.
