    Visit to Genoa

Being in Italy this week reminded me of a visit to Genoa, back in July 1973.

In this view are the Stelvio of the Adriatica Line; the fire-damaged and soon-to-be-scrapped Homeric; and, also in her final days, the Italian cruise ship Caribia 2 (the former Roma of the Lauro Line).

I'm loving these nostalgic articles you're posting Vernon. As I was at sea in this era,I would probably have seen these in Genoa and other Med.ports.
I enjoy researching their history and eventual fate, especially those like Cariba 2 (below),as I think others here do.

m.v.STELVIO,4,408 grt.Blt.3/59 for Adriatica Line,Venice. 1980 Owners now Viajes Cruceros Mediterraneo Co.SA,retaining name STELVIO,and reflagged to Greek.
    12/86 Broken Up Eleusis,Greece

    s.s.HOMERIC ,18,017 grt.Built 12/31 as MARIPOSA for Oceanic SS Co,Los Angeles. 1954 Sold to Home Lines,Panama,renamed HOMERIC.
    1/74 Broken Up Kaohsiung,Taiwan.

s.s.CARIBIA 2, 14,2000 grt. Laid down in 1941 as a wartime Type C3-6-A2 (Aircraft Carrier) with tonnage of 10,200 grt,at Western Pipe,San Francisco, intended to be named USS CROATAN by the US Navy. Completed instead for Royal Navy as HMS FENCER in 1943.
1951 Converted to passenger ship of 14,708 grt for Achille Lauro Lines,Italy and renamed SYDNEY.
    1968 Renamed ROMA for Med.Cruising
1970 Renamed GALAXY QUEEN for Sovereign Cruise
1973 Renamed LADY TINA,then quickly to CARIBA 2 by owners G.Kotsovilis
    9/75 Broken Up La Spezia.

I was on a Baltic boat ( I know, sounds wrong, but early sixties the UBC had two boats on the med run, home port Hamburg ) for 15 months, great ship the Baltic Trader, and I think I am right in saying it was the base of the Yankee sixth fleet, however, we used to ship huge amounts of Becks beer to Genoa, which was great, as some got lost !, and it was a great run ashore in those days, kt

Lloyd Triestino had two Victorias the first was the worlds fastest passenger ship and the second I was lucky enough to sail in From Karachi to Singapore via Colombo. We cut out Bombay probably due to some political squabble.

A beautiful cargo passenger vessel you can see an excellent spread on her by Rueben Goossens at ssmaritime .com. She was sold to Mercy Ships and renamed Anastasis serving for a total of 54 years

The food was about the best I have had afloat, There were only about fifty first class passengers and the Major Domo came round to us all asking our preferences for the next day.

Among the passengers was the charming Yugoslavian ambassador to Japan and his family. Years later Octavio Paz, a Nobel prize winning writer and poet who was the Mexican ambassador to India, Pakistan and Ceylon sailed into exile on her from Bombay. He resigned in protest against the shooting of 127 students ordered by President Dias Ordaz just before the 1968 summer Olympics

I spent several pleasant hours on the bridge with the Second Officer. A most enjoyable voyage.

    Hi Vernon.
I remember going into Genoa and Naples back in the early 50s, wondered at all the white foam like stuff in the water as we approached, turned out to be used condoms.
The girls of both ports were the most beautiful I encountered anywhere, that is until I met my wife.
    Cheers Des

I will continue to send them on to Vernon as I recieve them from a very good friend of mine here in Melbourne. He was a navigation officer with Blue Star in the 80's.

They bring back so many great memories to so many, something that I think any of us would want to share.
    Happy daze John in Oz.
