Researching
I am looking for any info on my Grandad
James Murray
DOB 1889 (can not find his actual dob have tried to to get his certifiacte with no Luck), on the 1911 census he is down as Harry Murray, but only have known him as James, it is believed he joined after jumping ship in Canada as he was sent over via Barnardos...he was the Indefagitable...her he is supposed to have changed his religeon from C/E to catholic, he was said to follow the priest everywhere carrying his books, I have a picture of him uniform (headshot) but it is not very good and can not make out the name o f the ship I also know he was on the Akbar, he married in 1909 so he was in the services then and also in the 1911 census's as on his marriage and 1911 certs he is shown as a Mariner I think he may have joined around 1905 onwards...he has one survivng son (my Uncle) whom has recently moved and trying to contact him for more help, can you help...My grandfather died when I was young, His Father was also a Mariner Thomas Murray and on leaving the Navy, he became a scaffolder on the railways and had a fall in Lyme street Station and died a year later from his injuries..I believe he may have served on HMS Spitfire, as I found a census in Liverpool with his name on and he was not on his home address census...
Colin
PS No I am not ex Navy, My Father was Royal Navy I have some papers of his as he passed away April Last year with Alziemers. he had a good send of with the Bugle and ex Navy Padre, I have his service number amongst a few papers , would help be given on these too...My father never spoke of his time in the war , I know his favorite medal was the Burma Star.
