Daughter of WWii Merchant Seaman
Hello everyone.
I'm the daughter of a merchant seaman who was (underage) on the Russian Convoys in Second World War. I never asked him about it. He died in the mid 1980's and I never thought to ask him, being too wrapped up in my own life (in my 20's then).
All I know is his name, Albert Edward Clegg, born Dec 1925.

Re: Daughter of WWii Merchant Seaman
Hi Tracy.
Welcome to the site. Sad to hear of your Dads passing without you knowing about his service, must have been horrendous as a young bloke on those Russian convoys, was bad enough for me as a 16 year old hitting a storm on my first trip. If you have your Dad's old discharge book could you list his ships please.
Cheers Des

#1. You don’t happen to have an older brother with the same surname do you Tracy ? Who also went to sea. If on the 100 to 1 chance you do , then maybe he was master on the Lowland Cavalier in 1988 , I met him again in 1991, and again about 1995 in Singapore. There are many coincidences in this world and is worth mentioning on the off chance. Regards JS..

#3 To add to … on the extreme possibilty of the name being related to yours , there is at least one member on site who was on the same vessel as mentioned who sailed with your namesake so may or may not have more personal information. It’s a case of yay or nay. JS

Re: Daughter of WWii Merchant Seaman
Hello Tracey,
I am passing on this information from a friend of mine so I take no credit for it. I know that it will be really helpful for you.
A quick check, assuming this link shows his correct date and place of birth suggests this is his seaman’s pouch at Kew - BT 372/705/182 - https://discovery.nationalarchives.g...ils/r/C8243228 note his place of birth, Manchester.
His medal file which will not show any entitlement to the Arctic Star
Is here in BT 395/1/17524 - https://discovery.nationalarchives.g...ils/r/D4284593
but if he met the criteria then his family could get it on his behalf but they will need to prove that entitlement so you need first a list of his ships. You will need his CRS 10 service record to prove that.
I think I have him on EMPIRE MARS see attached in 1945 but this was not a Russian Convoy ship so CRS 10 needed. It should be held at TNA Kew in piece BT 382/338 - https://discovery.nationalarchives.g...ls/r/C10988564
Or if he stayed in the MN beyond say 1965 check here : BT 382/2200 - https://discovery.nationalarchives.g...ls/r/C10990424
The CRS 10 will require a visit to Kew or copied via a researcher.
If he is entitled to the Arctic Star then I can help with pointing you to what else is required and the process but for now the CRS 10 is what you need.
Hope that you manage all this ,Tracey
Regards
Brenda

Re: Daughter of WWii Merchant Seaman
Hello Tracy
Your Fathers Seamans Pouch is here and has to be applied for.
This will have limited info though and you would need his CRS10 fora fuller Sea Service record.
I will look that up later and post here
