What part of England are you originally from! That is where were you Born!
Also the J Black you mention,he wasnt perhaps on the Castle Boats in the 1958 timeframe was he? as i knew a Johnny Black then too! Also a Stwd in Tourist Class!

Hi Jackie
Welcome aboard. I'm also new to the site having joined up a couple of days ago.

I joined the Oronsay on 8/3/57 as Ass/Stwd and signed off on 21/05/57. Rejoined on 4/6/57 and signed off 23/9/57. Prior to that I did two voyages on the Orion and following the Oronsay I did two voyages as a tourist waiter on the Orcades. Friends I sailed with on those ships were Ronnie Coull & Brian Loughborough (Lushy) and we were all from the same town, West Hartlepool, Co Durham.

Lushy now deceased and Ronnie now living in Brisbane.

Hi James or Jackie, I knew a guy called brian Laughbourough (most probably spelt dfferent ) we were great mates and had some great times, us ondering what ver became of him, what did he do=, ge married have kids, he was a great mate, super funny,,,,,,,,Gib,,,New Zealand

It's a true story, the fishermen of Hartlepool hung a monkey because they believed it was a French spy!!!!! They've made a fortune out of the story ever since! Reading the comments re Brian Loughborough. It's difficult to believe there could have been two individuals living in Hartlepool at the time with identical names who went to sea and worked in the catering department. I remember 'Lushy' as a tallish, fair haired lad, and as crazy as the rest of us were at that time. I do have a photograph of him taken at the Coogee Bay Hotel, Sydney, around 1958. Which kind of puts paid to the Union Castle Line stories? Or perhaps not.

There was a story that he jumped ship in Australia at some stage. Then I heard he'd lost a leg in a bus accident in Hartlepool. In 1964 I emigrated to South Africa and lost track of everyone. About four years ago I tracked down Ronnie Coull who'd been living in Brisbane for about thirty years and who'd sailed with both of us on Orient Line ships. He supplied me with Brians address in Hartlepool. I wrote to him but never got a response. I have been told that he'd passed away since then.

I'm not sure how his name was spelt but I think I've got it right.

How's life in New Zealand these days? I got married in Wellington in November 1959 to a girl I met in the Mexically (Don't think that's the correct spelling ) Coffee Bar when I was on the Dominion Monarch.

Ronnie Coull was born, to the best of my knowledge, in West Hartlepool thus avoiding being called a Monkey Hanger!! He now lives in Brisbane, Australia, where he's resided for over thirty years. He has no intention of returning because of the price of beer!!!
