Hi. Looking for some help re WW2 medals belonging to my grans second husband. We have no details of his service but think he may have been in the merchant navy. The number on the box containing the medals is JX359283 and thinkHis name is Harry Benton - officially Henry Anderson Benton. DOB 13/11/02 born in Aberdeen. Thanks Susan.

Re: Is this a merchant navy service number?
Hello Susan
As i had posted in the Chat Box a few days ago, it loos like a Royal Navy Number , i had put a Link there but have since lost that Link.
Will look again and post if found. I feel that our Hugh will know a lot more on this Number as he is ex RN. I think the MOD would be the best bet for any records on him if he served before 1929. ???

Re: Is this a merchant navy service number?
Just to confirm that he was definitely in the Royal Navy and next of kin should apply for his service record - cost = £30 but there may be a delay due to MoD backlog.

Thanks that’s really helpful. Family knowledge obviously not correct! Will look at applying for service record.

Re: Is this a merchant navy service number?
Seems some sceptism on his name. Benton is an area or town near Newcastle on Tyne, and as born in Scotland could Benton be a nickname. .? JS
