    Default Hello from Canada

My name is Deb and I've come here from doing family research on Ancestry and various other sites.

I'm not quite sure where to post this, but I'm wondering if anyone knows of a Merchant Navy Ship called the "Venus" out of Liverpool. I believe my 2nd great grandfather was indentured on this ship between 1857 and 1861. His name was William Barrow. I haven't been able to find him in the 1841 - 1861 censuses, though I have found he married in 1863 and lists his occupation as an engineer.

Thanks for any info you can provide, I'm so glad to have found this site.

    Welcome Aboard Deb.
It seems likely the s.s.VENUS was this one--INFOLINK
As you can see from the Infolink she was an iron screw passenger steamer (ss) of 229 tons gross,144 tons net, 179 ft L x 17.0 ft Beam x 8.0 ft draft.Completed 1855 by Mare & Co,Blackwall,London for the Gravesend New Steam Packet Co.,London.It is probable that she was built for the Thames estuarial passenger ferry/day cruise trade,a thriving trade at that time. Unfortunately no later history of her available that I can find, other than that she subsequently went to an overseas owner.

    Best Wishes
    Graham

I am really not sure about the ship Vernon, only my thoughts on the likelihood of it being that one. Deborah mentions 'Venus' and a Liverpool connection,so more info required about her GG GF William's career as you say before we can verify that vessel.

There was a Venus a Bergen ferry ran into the Tyne , there was also a Jupiter . You could hardly call them the Heavenly twins as that title had been taken up for many years by the stars Castor and Pollux also referred to as Cast Iron Bollix. JS

...and of course all of them must have had quite a descriptive figurehead of Venus on their prows according to that old naughty seafaring rhyme..

Venus was so common on sailing ships back then... !
