    Wink J Rose

Hello Everone, Am rather a late comer to the wonderful world of computers, that is Laptops, Having spent 32 years of my life in the Merch so pleased to have found this site, but rather sad so little mentioned of companys and ships let alone people that I have sailed with, For now just a quick list 1951 to 1960 Reardon Smith Line. 1961 to 1968 Bristol City Line ( Charles Hill) 1968 to 1978 Bibby Line and then till I came ashore in 83 C.Y.Tungs English Company. Starting life as a boy rating and ending as a Purser Catering Officer. Have left my Discharg eBooks in Spain where I have lived since retirement in 1997. when I am able to check dates feel sure the will be people to talk with. Its good to be here.

    Default Bristol City Line

Hi JR, another warm Welcome to the site. 32 years at sea is a great chunk out of anyone's life!
There are quite a few ex-Bibby men aboard here. Although I only did 21 years at sea, after serving my time as Deck Cadet 1969-72,like many of us 'greener seas' beckoned afterwards.
But Bibby's incl BCL and Watts Watts(Britain Steamship Co) was a good outfit, and I'm proud to have served my time with them.
In my time,Bibby Line had just bought BCL and had the Coventry City amd Toronto City, really smart looking cargo ships. They were manned principally by ex-BCL men at first I remember until fully integrated into Bibby's..
My final ship with Bibby's was the Dart America(that was managed by Clarke Traffic Services of Montreal, but operated by Bibby's.).They owned the Dart Atlantic too, which came with the Bristol City Line takeover if you remember. I was always proud of that Dart America,Bristol in my Dis A. Book amongst all the other Bibby(Liverpool) ports of registry.
Vernon(Castleman) has already directed you to the Bibby Line forum here,so I'll just add these further links. One of them is a BCL link to a thread on a fellow MN Site.
    Enjoy your voyage with Us!
    Cheers from Davey(Gulliver)

    Cool For John Rose

Hi John.....welcome aboard, I am sure that you will find some old friends here. l I was with Reardon Smiths from 1948 to 1953, we have some mutual friends....Anthony (Jo) Johansen from Canada, we sailed together on the Atlantic City in 1951, met up with him and Joy about two years ago when they spent some time in Florida, had not seen him since 1956 when we were boith with Bristol Steam Navigation ! I have also been in contact with Alan Pound for a couple of years, but never sailed with him. Heard quite a bit about you from Jo and he sent me a photo of you and yours in Spain. Anyway, grab a berth and a cold one. Cheers...Glan Phillips

Well you are a blast from the past !!! Good to see you here John,You could teach some of these so called Celebrity Chef's, a thing or two, The last time I saw you was on one of the "City" ships, that was at Avonmouth, if I was on the stand by crowd, would try to make sure I was on your boat for midday meal! I believe that was proir to you going on the Bibby ships as Chief Steward. Spoke to M P. some time back he updated me on you, that must have been some time back, for I was not aware of you moving to Spain. We had a reunion of B.C.L. back in Oct 06. Roy & Alan Clarke, Harry Higgins to name just a few, were there. Trust you are keeping well, look forward to your postings. Best Regards AJM.

    Cool For John Rose

Hello John....many thanks for yours, good to hear that Alan is doing well again. I talked to Jo a couple of nights ago and told him that you were on this web site. I think that you may have joined the Atlantic City after I left, I joined her on 17/10/49 in Avonmouth and completed that trip on 22/2/50, Captain Wilson (aka "crosseyed Wilson ! ). Sighned back on 23/2/50 and completed that trip on 9/5/51 at Avonmouth, that was with Captain Tommy Dixon, a great skipper. Am hoping to get back home as soon as I can sort this place out and sell up. Had seriously thought about moving to Spain, but lost the wife suddenly April 2005 so that put an end to that ! Since then been alone except for my two feline companions. Am still in contact with an old friend who now lives in Llangybi, near Usk, we sailed together in Reardon Smiths, he left the sea and spent the rest of his working days as a prison officer, retired and lived in Spain (Denia) for about 12 years, returned back to the UK about 8 years ago. Have rambled on enough, hopefully will be lucky enough to catch up with you and Alan and have a couple of cold ones !
    Cheers,
    Glan

    Default Distant Memory

    Hello AJ,
All the memories come flooding back but do you think that I can put a face to you ?? not on your life, strange those years seem as only yesterday and one is delighted to hear names from the past, people and ships but now in most cases long gone, this is why delighted to have found this site, and the prospect of hearing from many many more people from those days when we were young. Take care, John
