Hia I'm a ex merchant seaman's daughter from Swansea. My dads name was Ernest Davies and he joined in around 1938 and left in 1959 his nickname was Duxie he had 2 brother's also in the merchant Alfred and Percey. I am trying to find out what ships he served on between 1938 and 1952. I have 1 of his discharge books but my mother has misplaced his earlier one I have his pouch from Kew but there is very little information in it used to love the stories he used to tell me when I was younger

1941 to 1972 Fifth Register of Merchant Seaman's Service
These records are held at The National Archives at Kew in classification BT 382. The Fifth Register of Seaman’s Service 1941 to 1972.
Records of individual Merchant Seamen's sea service details are held in alphabetical surname order. These details include the following information: Name of seaman, Date and place of birth, Discharge (Seaman’s) book number, Rank, Details of the ships on which he served. These include: Name of ship and official number, date of engagement (Joining ship), Date of discharge (Leaving ship), whether ship was a foreign going of home trade vessel, and records in some cases National Insurance contributions. Details shown in these records are similar to those contained in an individual seaman's discharge book.
The actual files are held in block by surname and would require a visit to Kew unless you are willing to pay for a researcher. His file should be held in the following file BT 382/443 covering the surnames "Davies Edward Brian to Davies Gomer Lewis" As the files are held in block by surname it would require a visit to Kew unless you are willing to pay the extortionate prices for a researcher.
"Across the seas where the great waves grow, there are no fields for the poppies to grow, but its a place where Seamen sleep, died for their country, for you and for peace" (Billy McGee 2011)

Re: Hia
thank you Deepsea Ive sent for an estimate to see how many arms and legs its going to cost lol as I live in Swansea the cost to Kew might be more than the researchers fee. Hopefully I should be able to fill in the gap soon so once again thank you Deepsea and to you Doc Vernon for the help and advice you have given to me
