    Default Kevin Barry

    Hi guys.

I left Gravesend round about March '70 joined the Pendennis Castle April 70 till Feb 71. Then Tidesurge Jan 71 to Dec 71. Bridgepool (Ropners) Feb 72 till Oct 72. Rudby (Ropners) Nov 72 till June 73. Rio Cobre Fyfes July73 till Nov 73. I'll let you know the dates I joined my other ships when I can find my discharge book. I put it in a place where I could always lay my hand on it when I needed it. Only I cannot remember where that place is.

Just an hello from me,thus far:

    Kevin Barry, rings bells,

    But IRISH HISTORY.

    Gather a name sake, inspires:

Kevin Barry features prominently in Frank McCourt's novel Angela's Ashes and in the 1999 movie adaptation of the book.

    Lyrics[edit]

As the author is unknown there is no definitive version, they can be sung with various verses added or omitted, or without the chorus, or other minor variations. This is one version:

In Mountjoy jail one Monday morning
    High upon the gallows tree,
Kevin Barry gave his young life
    For the cause of liberty.

Just a lad of eighteen summers,
Still there's no one can deny,
As he walked to death that morning,
He proudly held his head on high.

    Chorus

Shoot me like an Irish soldier.
Do not hang me like a dog,
For I fought to free old Ireland
    On that still September morn.

    All around the little bakery
Where we fought them hand to hand,
Shoot me like an Irish soldier,
For I fought to free Ireland

Just before he faced the hangman,
    In his dreary prison cell,
    British soldiers tortured Barry,
Just because he would not tell.

The names of his brave comrades,
And other things they wished to know.
Turn informer or we'll kill you
    Kevin Barry answered "No".

    Proudly standing to attention
While he bade his last farewell
    To his broken hearted mother
Whose grief no one can tell.

For the cause he proudly cherished
This sad parting had to be
Then to death walked softly smiling
That old Ireland might be free.

    Another martyr for old Ireland,
    Another murder for the crown,
Whose brutal laws may kill the Irish,
But can't keep their spirit down.

Lads like Barry are no cowards.
From the foe they will not fly.
Lads like Barry will free Ireland,
For her sake they'll live and die.

Added as historic, either way. K.

    Keith.
I think things like that are now best forgotten, enough is enough on both sides. That was 100 or so years ago.
I was lucky a couple of times in the 80s.do not want to experience all that again.

Keith perhaps Kevin Barry, should have been consulted before posting #5, he may not agree with any of the sentiments there-in. You seem to have this odd habit as soon as you see 'Barry' in something you rush into print. Never heard of 'Let sleeping dogs lay' we don't need those sort of ballads on here, my name gives a clue to my origins and I certainly wouldn't have the gaul to put something like that on.

If Martin McGunman can take a toast to Her Majesty , then I think it is time to move forward . I have heard several programmes on BBC Radio 4 and World Service this week , and there are many men and mothers who will never forgive , until the truth is told and the bad men of both sides are exposed and reconciled with the truth . I am old fashioned , when Freedom Fighters kill people , innocent and guilty then they are terrorists , but if forgiveness was the key to moving forward , then so be it as long as both sides are forgiven
