    Hi Helen.
Welcome to the site , if your Granddad was in the MN Ask your Mum if she has any papers left by you granddad, there may be a discharge book if he was in the MN, if so send in some of the ships names that will be on it. If you can't find his book look for some information so that the lads can do a trace.
    Cheers Des

    Default More information

    Hello again all,
Thank you so much for all the encouragement and advice so far
Unfortunately the information we have is very limited and we have no paperwork due to some family issues. What I do know is his full name was Richard Eric Thorn born 27th or 28th December 1926. His mothers name was Ada Sheffield and his father Oliver Thorn.
In terms of his life in the Navy all we know is that he was in the Malta Convoys and was torpedoed in the Mediterranean and also torpedoed in the Bearings Sea on the supply convoys to Russia, he didn't talk about it much but this is the limited information he shared with my Dad over a couple of beers!!
I really would be so grateful for any help as I really don't know where to start
    Thanks, Helen

I don't think that will be him and the information you would get from the card will not move your search on much I am afraid.
There does not appear to be an online record but that does not mean there are no records for him. You would need to check for a CRS 10 [service record from Jan, 1941] which should be held at Kew in BT 382/1799
The file is best obtained by visit to Kew.
    Regards
    Hugh

    Default Ada & Oliver

No sign either of a marriage of Ada & Oliver on Ancestry in England & Wales, what nationality are they, if Scottish perhaps someone who
subscribes to Scots People will be able to help, Fred.
