Alfred Whittaker:
There is some kind of record at Find My Past:
WHITTAKER, Alfred
Unknown (West Bay Portland)
1879
LINK: Search maritime* death records 1794-1964 | Fully indexed death records | Findmypast.co.uk
Nearest Alfred Whiitaker for a birth thus far is 1828 Warwick, Warwickshire.
Have you any ideas as to when and where born etc ?
Male aged 49: Date of death : 21.01.1879 could see his birth being 1829 - 1830, he may not have known or remembered and could have added a year for various reasons ?

Yes this is him. What i am after are any inquest records. I find it hard to believe that he was lost overboard and that the only mention would be the piece I have found in the paper. But then it was 1879 and a lot of people were lost at see then. Maybe there was not inquest?

Alfred Whittaker:
Toni, the more information we can receive the more chance of a result, hence the questions. establishing where he was born or lived etc could help us much. The news paper report mentions Sunderland, which could suggest he was from there ? otherwise his home town may have better record ?
Often one lead can assist much, but we need to find the links. Generally, most that help are looking for similar for others also, it is important that you also update as now, as if you find something new, it saves others time seeking the same.
As you say it was a long time ago, but others seeking the same may exist, find this post and reply, my own search has over the years out of the blue turned up trumps.
More suggestions and possibly some results may come, fingers crossed. In my home town I would have a fair idea of who to contact and where to look. If we can establish his abode I can help more.
For us it is always a bit of a cold case and we start at square one.
The information you seek, is no doubt availiable somewhere, but where.
One reqest years ago resulted in the finding of hand written ledgers, in an ABP store room, half were recovered and copied, the rest remain in a near attic room that health and safety refuse access to.
I know my local library holds all the local newspapers on microfiche and is searchable, but would take forever if we tried this in the wrong town.
Could you upload the cutting you have to here out of interest.
In the main, never give up.

VIA OUR BRANCH PADRE:
LOOKING AT SOMETHING TOTALLY DIFFERENT BUT,
But if we can discover more will aid us in finding much ?
Still trying: K.
This service was a quite a while ago, and to be honest I cannot remember where the service took place. It might just be an idea to check with A. G. Adams Funeral Home in Barry, they have records of all services. Also it might be worthwhile checking with Andrew, who is the Sexton at Barry Town cemetery, He will be able to tell you immediately where Henryk is buried.
I learn much as I go along and keep my fingers crossed that we may discover what is sought along the way. K.

Re: His name was Alfred James Whittaker.
I attach a newspaper clipping report the death of my ggGrandfather, Alfred Whittaker, who was the Chief Mate mentioned. This is from the Sunderland Daily Echo and Shipping Gazette of 27 January 1879. Any ideas on how i could find out more about his death and if his body was ever found would be appreciated.
