    Default Hello all!!

Thank you for allowing me to join British Merchant Navy, Old Friends Plus....

I am actually ex-Royal Artillery (for my sins!!), but now work for an Organisation that offers various platforms for Service Personnel (Past & Present), the Merchant Navy, the Reserve Forces and their families to engage in future career opportunities with Organisations and want to pass these on to the members here!

Happy for anybody to contact me for more information.... dominic.h@bfrss.org.uk

Some of the services we provide are Employment & Career Fairs that we normally start with the prefix of Ex-Military, but what would be the acceptable term used for you guys as I do not want to start on the wrong footing!!??

    Many thanks, Dominic

Dominic, first of all we wish you well in your endeavours The Merchant Navy personnel have always been known as the "Forgotten Service" doubt much will change that. Why not just "Merchant Navy Personnel"

I remember returning from the Suez invasion in1956 whilst serving on a Merchant vessel, (part of the invasion fleet entering with the RN ships on 6th November) I tried to get a drink in the British Legion and was told I wasn't welcome because the MN was not considered part of the Services, I was with my father who had been in Dunkirk in the Army, also in the MN, on convoys Atlantic, served on Arctic trips also and the Pacific theatre and also on special ops in 1944 he never set foot in another British Legion. We are still looked upon as if we never served our country, although I know men in the Forces !!! who never left the UK who are greated and treated like heroes.

Good luck in your endeavours lets hope they redress the balance, it seems that only Churchill and Montgomery realised the importance of the MN to their causes and aspirations for victory, thus it seems, it will ever be.

    Good luck

    Ivan

very true, Ivan, it is unfair, I went to a dance run by the British Legion for the troops in 1956, merchant navy wernt allowed in, and royal navy were asked to leave as well. Disgusting. Loads of food to eat and plenty over but they were just one minded, only the troops were honoured. I feel everyone did their bit back then, but its a class thing, isnt it? This happened in Capetown, so it goes to show that the BL were likeminded no matter where they were in the world.
