I have only just joined this site in the hope I can find out more information about the ships my Grandfather served on when he was in the Merchant Navy. But as yet I have had no luck!!
I have only just got his discharge papers and there are about 15 ship numbers of only 2 (I think I have found, but unsure if correct or not)

Default Merchant Navy ship number and photos.

Just looking through the list of ships names supplied by John and I notice one ship LESBIAN 1923. I wonder when this word crept into the English language tobe used as it is today.Obviously it has always meant what it means but could you imagine a ship owner today naming a ship LESBIAN.Just a thought.
    Regards.

    Hi Jim,

Yes I see where you are coming from and also wonder when this word started to be used as what we know as todays meaning.

    Best wishes

I do believe there has never been a ship with the name of S.S. PHYLISS

    Hi Doc Vernon,
Can I ask another question? I have just looked the the site via the link "Old Ship Pictures" when I view a ship that has more than 1 picture, how can I been sure what ship is the correct one?
I looked for the ship "Lesbian" and there are about 4 pictures all different.

    Many Thanks.

    John,
I can tell you that LESBIAN - 04 on the photoship site is definately the 1923 built ship.

    Hi Hugh,
Many thanks for your reply, that picture was one that had several photos, but I am still a bit confused as to how I can identify the correct ship when there are more than 1 photo!! I did notice some photos had a date written on them, but this is not the case for all.
Can I ask if you served on the Lesbian? or any of the ships that my grandfather served upon?
    Best wishes
    John.
