My mother & uncle have told me he was bombed during ww2 while taking supplies to normandy,he was moving with the yanks to Omaha beach when his shipp was torpedod/Bombed.
They travelled from the top of Norway with Russian convoys & i was told it was very dangerous.
My grandfather lived till he was 72 in 1980.
My childhood memories are of him away at sea,I know Japan was one of his favourite places 7 i can remember his home trips. He went on to have a small boat which he kept in balloch,Loch Lomand & i can remember going there as a child.
i would love it if i could find out a bit more of his life at sea..

Hi Anne and welcome to this great site. I have so far found the following quote on another MN site which will be of interest and tracked down the photo mentioned. I will post more as I find it.

I served on the MV Londoner from 1961 to 1966 as an Engineer. All the ships you guys are asking about are NOT the Oregon Steamship Companies Londoner. That is certainly the House Flag of Oregon. On my Londoner The O in the Green Diamond was on the Funnel as well as the Bow,
She was Sulzer powered. All the Officers both deck and engineering never changed all the years I was with her. The Skipper was Capt Peaz, Chief Officer Ernie Walters, Chief Engineer Bill Finch, 2nd Engineer Freddie Miller (Whose father was Coxwain of the Seaham Harbour Lifeboat when all handa were lost round about 1964). Most of the time I worked aboard the Londoner, we were running Grain from the States to the UK. We did the occasional run to South Africa and Japan. There is a Photgraph of my Londoner on the Site "Ships Nostalgia" and the Site "All at Sea". Hope I have been of help.

He may have a record CRS10 in the 5th register which should be in BT 382/289 Carrick L to Carroll J covering dates 1941 Jan - 1943 Dec

what you appear to have received is Registry of Shipping and Seamen: War of 1939-1945; Combined Office Merchant Navy Operations, Seamen's Pouches BT 391 series

    Default s.s. WHEATCROP

    Hello Ann,
Just a few more details in addition to Ray's:-

s.s. WHEATCROP (Official No 145737) was a 523 ton coastal cargo vessel of the Spillers) S.S.Co..Built 1/1924 by Hansen SB & Repair Co of Bideford,Devon.
Spillers (the grain millers) owned a fleet of coasters over the years to transport grain to their many mills.

    Length 49.4m;Beam 7.8m.
    Engine 2 cyl.compound giving 9 knots.
    History
Sold 1953 to J.S.Monks and renamed ROCKVILLE
    7/1956 Broken Up at Barrow
A picture can not be found at the moment, but if one of her sister WHEATPLAIN can be found, then she is identical to the Wheatcrop.
