I'm a newbie to the list. I'm researching my family history and trying to find information of Tom Bailey Marsden, born 1900 Sleaford Lincolnshire, Died Mayquarter 1988. Gravesend District, Kent.
Certification Number; 0013706, date 6.4.1920, Southshields.
SS 1st Mate 13.11.1922 Sunderland.
Master SS 20.12.1926 Newcastle.
Certificate 49631 Master 19.1.1943 Copy in lieu.
EXN Certificate No 0013706 Lost by Enemy Action Ex MV Waiotira 26.12.1940 Torpedoed off Rockall.
Married ? Margaret Walsh late Hobson, c1930's.
Any information of his Merchant Navy career would be appreciated.

Hi Maidens.
Some information on the Waiotira.
Waiotira 12,823 tons sunk by U-38 [Hienrich Liebe] 50.10N 16.56 W ; Enroute Sydney to UK via the Panama canal. On the 26th Dec 1940 at 20.03 was hit in the bows by torpedo from U-95 [Gerd Schreiber] Northwest of Rockall, was missed by second torpedo at 20.07, but hit aft by third torpedo at 20.18 U95 left the area owing to presence of destroyers.
The stopped Waiotira was located by U-38 on the 27th Dec and hit beneath the bridge at 0.46. she subsequently sunk.
One passenger was lost, 89 passengers and crew were rescued by HMS Mashona and taken to Greenock.

Thanks Mr Jenkins for your information I've seen the report on the "U Boat" website but I cannot find a list of the rescued crew and passengers which I would be very grateful to obtain a copy.
