    Default hello - S.S Devonshire

    Hi All
I found this site while googling the merchant ship S.S. Devonshire.

while going through some old photos of my grandmothers I found this picture of the crew of the S.S. Devonshire, the back of the photo has 4.17.1911 in handwriting so I am assuming that was the date of the photograph.

My grandmother showed me this picture many years ago and told me that her uncle, Peter Ryan, was a 'master saddler' for the merchant navy and that he was in this picture but I dont recall her being able to pick him out.

Peter Ryan, a 38 year old widower, is listed in the 1911 dublin census as a Saddler and was at my grandmothers house as a visitor at the time of the census. sadly my grandmother passed away a few years ago and much of the family history has gone with her

if anyone has any further info on this ship or her crew I would be very interested in hearing, if not please feel free to add the picture to your site

    regards
    Brian

ps the origional picture is 500kb and I would be happy to e-mail it in full if anyone is interested

Tony, unfortunately the picture of the vessel you have attached is of the 1939 built Bibby Line troopship m.v.'Devonshire ' and certainly not the one referred to in this query .

    Sorry !

    Best Regards

    Hi Tony,

The attached thumbnail on your post re Devonshire is a different ship as to what Brian posted. The vessel in your attachment is m.v.Devonshire, Bibby Line Troopship built around 1939 and was sold in 1962 to B.I. Line to be used as a school cruise ship - renamed Devonia. I sailed on her when I was with Bibbys.
    Regards,
    John

The only pictures I can find of the Blacksod which she was named in 1919 is HERE and HERE unless of course someone else comes up with one.

P.S. the s.s. BLACKSOD might be rather un-PC these days..especially if registered in Lagos...

I believe my father was on the SS Devonshire which was sunk by a german U-boat sometime in 1939. Most of the crew were rescued and spent the next 4 years in Marlag. I would be grateful if anyone has any further information

    Hello Denise and welcome,
I think you may have the wrong ship. Can you give his name, date and place of birth please and we should be able to help clarify what ship he was on.

    Regards
    Hugh

Denise mentions Marlag in her post, which was a purpose built camp to hold captured seamen from the Royal Navy. Once we have his name, Hugh or I will be able to check his name against all prisoners from Milag to see if he was actually a Merchant Seamen, which will name the ship he was on. Not sure if Hugh has the Marlag section of the publication for the RN as I do not.

Yes, sorry he was on the SS Devon which was sunk by a German U-boat during the war he was in Marlag Nord between 1941 - 1945. Albert Miller 2nd engineer, dob 21st April 1916 unfortunately died in 1995. his wife, my mother is still alive but in a nursing home. I have quite a lot memorabilia to share if anyone is interested and would like to know if any of the crew who were with my dad are still alive.

    Denise
