The wine storage capacity at Soton was 424,000 gallons., The Southampton & Good Hope Castle could hold 60,000 gallons. The first bulk shipment was on the Southampton Castle.
The discharge rate was 12,000 gallons per hour.

Did'nt Alfred Hitchcock do one of his short stories regarding the daily run.A man and wife went on a cruise which they could not realy afford so his plan to get money was was todo the lowest mileage figure and to stop the ship in someway. His scheme was for his wife to jump overboard so the ship would have to turn around. He tells his wife to stand by somebody on deck and to make sure that they see her jump overboard. She stands next to this young lady then jumps over the side,a nurse comes out on deck to the young lady, the young lady tells the nurse a woman has just jumped over the side, the nurse replies I know dear I know and leads the girl (a mental patient )away. The End.

I know the third engineer on the platform ( main engine control ) was offered a nice bung to slow us down by this guy who was tourist class and in over his head , don't know f it wad the auctioned number or a side bet . He was playing against some bottomless pockets in first class . How do you drop ten revs for two four hour watches without getting caught . I thought the system was the numbers were auctioned off , ten either side of the Captains guess , the highest bid scooping the jackpot , winner takes all , minus a charity rake off . Some high rollers in first could drive the daily prize to a stupid figure , this guy thought 20/1 was good odds .

Rob, I joined one foreign flag ship where it was stipulated in the agreement that a 500 pounds bonus would be paid at the completion of the 12 months contract. Being young and stupid I didnt read the small print which said with the proviso that for every day off hire due to engine breakdowns etc. 50 pounds would be deducted from this figure. That 500 pounds disappeared the first month on this old wreck. The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, that is a load of bollicks and whoever made up that saying should have left it in Aesops fairy tales. There is only one winner and that was the shipowner. I have never been a gambler for money and always wanted a sure thing, very rarely seen such in shipping. Cheers John S

Las Palmas outward, Maderia homeward and yes 6008 nautical miles. On the Windsor the head barman who ran the 'daily log' betting syndicate. It was rumoured he made a fortune out of it.

I have many happy memories of 'working by' UCL ships in Southampton followed by many voyages on the Edinburgh and Pendennis Castles. Although the Southampton Castle officially completed the final mailship run in 1977, the Good Hope Castle made one further round voyage at the end of that year. I was junior 2nd Engineer on her and we fervently hoped that more runs would follow, however, it was not to be and it was a very emotive ringing of FWE at the end of that voyage.
