Davits
Brian "Welin Crescent" the wind out ones, and "Welin-Maclachlan" the gravity davits. I sailed on ships with radial davits, usually awkwardly placed so you couldn't get a proper swing going, seemed almost they were fitted as an afterthought and not a life saving appliance, our survival was always immaterial, nothings changed

Thanks for that Ivan, I knew the name Welin but not the rest of it. I am slowly getting old timers disease.
Cheers
Brian.

#1 Keith, that's a coincidence. Stirling Castle was my first ship in 1949.I was also a Bridge Boy on my first voyage. Don't remember that smoke dectector though.May have been fitted later. I do remember the Chief Officer was the terrifying(to me) Swiveleye Lloyd. The first Officer was Mr.Laurenson, the fattest man I'd ever seen. Good days though.Hope you and I get together this year for that beer or two.

Hope i can meet this year Colin, have a natter and a noggin . I see the sad state of the old pier in Southampton when i come in on the ferry, i have happy memories of that pier and the dances the night before sailing on the Stirling Castle, i did three trips on her, regards KT
