    Default Tomatoes for sale

My 25 square meter veg patch has done very well this year, heavy winter and early Spring rain fall helped.

Silver Beet in mass proportion, Beans by the kilo, Zucchini, so many gave half away, and the tomato crop one of the best I have had in years.

Then this morning looking at BBC news I see there is a rationing of some veg in UK.

The article stated that most supermarkets are restricting sales of Tomatoes to 3, cucumber and Capsicum to one each per customer.
Something to do with a severe shortage.

Now lads this can be overcome very easily, build a greenhouse and heat it, plenty all year round, enough to sell and make a profit.

Then I saw electric prices are on the move again......up I was told.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Life is too short to blend in.

The tomato problem is weather related in Spain, this is where most of the tomatoes come from, they only represent tomatoes in shape and a nearly read colour, tasteless things, and something we never buy. We are lucky here on the Island as it is a producer nearly all year round of proper tomatoes , ones that taste. I come from a generation that did not see tomatoes all year round, much like all the fruit that is available from overseas now. We only saw tomatoes , cucumbers et in season. Now everyone used to strawberry all year round, and begin to bleat when all this stuff not available. Then you have the usual panic buying, methinks a little hardship might do some people the world of good, get over it, we cannot have everything we want.

Who buys three packs of tomatoes or three cucumbers anyway, it would go rotten in our house before it was all used. As per usual the news of this is on all media channels so will cause more panic buying.

I agree, there will be more thrown away than eaten. At least bog rolls keep longer.

It may help with the refugee invasion to the UK from Europe. Only rescue those who have brought a box of vegetables with them. Promise them if they do a few more trips they will be fast tracked through the immigration service, care of Air Rwanda.

From what I have read it is down to greed before need. Energy price hikes and lack of planning by the growers they reckon they will not get a good return on their investments.
I reckon a lot of it is the Big Supermarket chains screwing the margins down what they pay to the food producers. Also the weather in Southern Europe has been bad Spain & Greece have had record snow fall this winter. A lot of winter Spanish produce is grown in polly tunnels /green houses and still need to be heated so energy costs come into play.
Will not do a lot any harm going short on a bit of food from what I see an awful lot of fat people out there.

I was in M&S earlier and came upon some tomatoes. After looking at them I started to feel a panic coming on, but the price of them calmed me down. Those big ones were £1 each, and a little pack of cherry tomatoes were £2.50.
On Tuesday I was in Sainsburys, they had cherry tomatoes at £1 a pack, so I allowed panic to set in and got three packs Two packs are in the fridge and will last us for a week.
I find this panic buying quite exciting, might go again tomorrow.

Post #4. I wonder if you can recall the Clyde Valley Tomato growers. Lovely small tomatoes with a minty taste. I thought it was the Arabs hiking up the price of oil that finished them but from this report various other factors.
