    Johnno re. #35.

When I emigrated to Canada in 1958 I had to get permission from the Bank of England marked in my UK passport in the last page entitled "Foreign Exchange for Travellers Expenses Special Allotment." I still have my old UK passport. I'm a paper rat pack, I kept everything, my Seamans Book and all certifications , newspaper cuttings, diplomas and job references, I even have a letter written from my school headmaster stating, "Rodney will do well in any overseas part of the Commonwealth". In other words "Go away boy, far away!"

    Cheers., Rodney

    Hi John #36
There were Building Societies in Aus, maybe only in NSW I don't know. When we came over in 72 we put our little Ill gotten gains from NZ into the Untied Permanent Building Society, there untill they were taken over by Westpac as St George Bank.

#42 They May then have had them here as well then Des but have never noticed , I just went along with the advice given me. However did find buying a house here had its advantages , as the amount remains owing to the bank came down every month. in the uk you were only paying off the interest the first 10 years or so. On the other hand you were allowed tax relieve on your own house ,here in Australia you weren’t , only on a. Second or fleet of houses .Suppose the theory was it would save the government building council houses or what they call public housing out here . A public house to me was always a pub or hostelery with a mine host selling you beer, similar to them calling Public schools here which are council schools but in England one immediately thinks of Eton.
To think one is supposed to sit an English test to emigrate or has that law been long done away with, ? JS

Des, down here in Victoria we had numerous building societies way back in the early 80's.
All now gone, taken over by the various banks.
As has been a number of other style home loan agencies, all bought out.
None have the money or ability to compete with the banks any more.

I got nothing , even had to sign a paper that I would not be a burden on the state. Medical costs full wack, taxed on every penny with no allowances until became a citizen in due course and got a tax file number . But up to which time was paying 49cents in every dollar. I came here under by own steam , and not by refugee boat. Cheers JS

John mater, you would have done far better if you had come as one.

When we came having money in deposits we had to pay peverencial tax, that is tax on profits when they come next year.
